TL;DR cracked intake hose, was dumb and limped jeep to work. Should I replace my turbo? Recently I was driving my 2006 tractor down the interstate when I suddenly lost all my boost and heard a small tornado start blowing under my hood (and a black one came out my exhaust pipe). I immediately shifted into neutral and let off the throttle. The noise stopped, the motor did not over heat, and the massive cloud of black smoke cleared up immediately. I foolishly drove the Jeep the rest of the way to work since I was close but stayed off the throttle so the turbo would not spool up. I did not realize that if I had lost a turbo seal (as opposed to a cracked hose) it would have pumped all the oil out instantly. Lesson learned! When I got the Jeep to the shop to assess the damage, I found exactly what I expected: a sizable crack in my intake side CAC hose (and a good bit of liquid oil). ![]() ![]() ![]() After seeing all that in the intake hose I removed the passenger side hose aswell. I found about the same amount of oil in that hose as I had found on the driver side hose. No cracks, but it went straight to the trash along with the other hose anyway. ![]() ![]() ![]() My turbo had a lot of wet oil in the exhaust port too. ![]() ![]() ![]() I felt no play in the turbo shaft and was only about a quart low on oil (limped at least 20 minutes on that blown hose). Every bit of that missing oil seemed to be all over my driver side engine compartment, so I purchased...
I cleaned everything off, installed the new hoses, made sure the oil was topped off, and cranked the motor up. No weird noises, no clouds of smoke, and the turbo sounded fine when I blipped the throttle in park. I let the motor run for a few minutes, then checked the insides of the hoses for oil. Everything was dry, so I took a gingerly test drive for ten minutes or so. I still have no oil residue in the hoses (EGR delete and tune 15k back). You guys think I am probably ok, or should I red-tag the Jeep and get a new turbo? Does all that liquid oil mean I have a leaking seal, or is that just because I had no boost pressure? Your turbo is just fine. All that oil came from the CCV. Inspect you turbo inlet hose really good. It has a tendency to rot out from the oil. |

for me is because you have not the right pressure when in limp mode , at me a cac hose popped off and cover with oil all that under the hood ..............turbo is too hot and I can't fixing well and the hose popped again ...... same result , black smoke , no power etcc etcc , but in mountain road and my turbo is ok |

Looks like everything is fine Steevo. Most of that oil was from the CCV that had failed. The new CAC hoses will help a lot, along with the CCV puck. As long as you got it to 2200 RPM and all hell didn't break loose, I'd say you're pretty safe. |

Similar happened to me, the cac hose popped of the intercooler on high boost (forgot to tighten the clamp) sounded like bomb going off under the hood. |

I would be more worried about damaging the turbo/engine running a damaged hose between the airfilter box and turbo...these rot out at the bottom where they attach to the turbo. You have vacuum here and could/would suck in dust and small debris. The other side of the turbo will have boost pressure and you would not be at risk of getting debris into engine. |

That's a good point. Mine looked OK but prevention is cheaper than repair. Sent from my SPH-L720T using Tapatalk |
