Reviving this old thread. I see there are several like it.
I googled around the other day (I guess I was lucky I looked elsewhere because lost was down), and some diesel experts said that all diesels have this Metallic tick to some extent, and minor variations in each engine make it more or less noticeable. I think they said it had something to do with crank journals and harmonics of a diesel engine....

Maybe GMCTD would have some input on this?
Anyhow, the engine that I just reassembled has it much louder than my daily driver, so I was worried. Kind of sounds like it's a 22RE toyota engine with clacking rockers, but the rockers are in great shape. It increases steadily with RPM's and may make this one hard to sell to a someone that's not knowledgeable about diesels.
The only other contributing factor I can think of is that I'm still tweaking the transmission fluid level, and it's either too high, or low. I'm having a really hard time getting a read on the dipstick (and I have great vision!)... It stalled in the driveway after going from drive to park, and it had been running for a few minutes, so I definitely don't have the fluid level correct. I wouldn't turn down any advice on that problem either

Oh, the extra deep PML pan, and the fact the transmission had one year to drain is complicating matters. Probably need 97 quarts!
