Like the title says, should it stay hard? After I prime mine and run it, the pump feels soft. Usually it takes 3-4 pumps to make it hard again.

Please excuse any innuendos.

Yes, it should stay firm. Once you pump it are you loosening the bleeder and releasing air?

If you want it to stay hard all the time, install a lift pump.
Remember, without a lift pump the fuel filter is under vacuum. You can manually pump it hard with the engine off but once you run the engine it will go soft again.

When you pump, bleed, repeat to get rid of air it will go "really" hard. Once you start driving it will relax to "firm" and may take like 3 pumps to go really hard again. If you have a first gen head pop the heater plug, small one, insert "Q" tip; does "Q" tip smell like diesel; if so get 2n gen head.

Just had this issue so I packed the heater plug with that epoxy putty and it sealed it up nice while I waited for my Racor unit to come in.
