Looking To Buy a Stock Intake Elbow and FCV

As it says in title, I am looking to buy a stock intake elbow and a FCV. The FCV does not need to be in working order. If anyone is interested in selling please let me know. These parts are needed to further my grid heater project I started before. Please PM or reply here if you are interested in selling.

I've got a couple of them laying around too - I don't keep the ones I pull from member's CRDs, they get to dispose of those heavy things themselves!

I purchased one of these grid heaters off of ebay to bolt in place of the weeks adapter at the manifold. It arrived yesterday. It is from a Cummins gen set, only has 1 element, is physically smaller and has a tighter bolt hole pattern compared to the grid heater on the 12 valve in my 1998 Dodge. I will plug the existing holes, re-drill for the CRD bolt pattern and make a 1/4" or 3/8" aluminum plate to sandwich between the grid heater and the intake manifold. The plate is a transition piece and will be needed to get a tight seal between the grid heater and the intake. The grid heater bolt pattern is about a 1/2 bolt diameter different from the CRD intake bolt pattern.

For $30 shipped. it's worth a try. It arrived in like new condition........probably a new take-off.

Geordi, I would like to purchase a intake elbow and FCV from you too. I bought 2 different types of intake air heaters, and I would like to parallel path both designs.

I'm curious how things turn out for you. Hopefully very good. I followed your heater thread, but I don't remember how many amps the heater for Cummins has. Looks quite big. While testing weeks heater, I have noticed a big drop when the heater was engaged. His heater is drawing 30A, I have measured it with a clamp to make sure. Heater, plus glow plugs plus cold temps is pretty wicked on the battery. I have dual batteries and still dropped to about 10v after 2 min of heater and ignition on with glow plugs. Just wanted to let you know part of my "research", I advise considering dual batteries or a big-mother-of-all cca battery.

Oh, and I installed a buzzer also when heater is on, I accidentally started it in the summer when I parked the jeep, 30ish minutes later it was smelling burnt rubber and took me a while to realize why... Next thing my cac blew up at the elbow... So idiot proofing the heater is never a bad idea, lol.

I never got around to using the Cummins heater. It was too large for physical size and had a current draw of 90 amps.
And that is why I am exploring 2 different options.

This grid heater more closely matches the intake manifold pattern than the FCV bolt pattern. The grid heater bolt pattern is only about a 1/2 bolt hole diameter different from the CRD intake bolt pattern. I am planning to bolt this grid heater in place of the Weeks elbow adapter.

It is more expensive, but according to the seller, the bolt pattern is close to the CRD FCV bolt pattern. I considered using it, but the hose connection is only 2" O.D. I thought about purchasing one, machining off the hose connection to make a gasket face and boring the I.D. to 55 mm. A spacer/sealing/transition plate from 1/2" aluminum would be needed between the grid heater and the factory intake tube. To sum up my thoughts I listed the components in order from CAC hose to intake below:

1. Factory CAC hose connection plate
2. Jeep OEM gasket
3. John Deere grid heater (with hose connection removed)
4. John Deere gasket
5. Aluminum spacer/sealing/transition plate
6. Jeep OEM gasket

These are the measurements the seller sent me:

Bolts are 2-3/8 center to center
base is 7/8 thick
outside of tube 2 inch

Phil,
The used John Deere heater arrived. The bolt hole pattern matches the stock elbow FCV pattern perfectly. The neck for the hose is too small however. I could machine off the neck and make a bolt on hose connector to fit the factory CAC hose. I have some 2 1/2" aluminum tubing with rolled ends that I bought from silicone intakes.com and some 1/2" aluminum plate. I don't weld aluminum, but I have a friend that is an expert.

I found a Yanmar grid heater on ebay. It seems to have the correct bolt pattern, but doesn't have the neck for the CAC hose and they are inexpensive. I purchased one. I offered the seller $15 and he accepted. They appear to be new. It should be here next week. I will still have to manufacture a hose connector.

The Yanmar grid heater fits the stock intake ELL like it was made for it. The bolt pattern is an exact match to the FCV flange. I will make a hose adapter from 1/2" aluminum plate and 2-1/2" aluminum tubing. The stock hose adapter for the FCV could probably be used, but the gasket sealing face is very narrow. My stock ELL was leaking from this gasket when I replaced it with the Weeks kit. I ordered 6mm x 1.0 x 50 mm socket head stainless bolts from Amazon. I'm not sure which gaskets to use at this time.

I did some testing on the Cummins single element grid heater and the Yanmar grid heater.
*The Yanmar grid heater has the same bolt pattern and bolts in place of the FCV
*The Cummins grid heater has a slightly different bolt pattern.
*The Yanmar grid heater pulls 40 amps
*The Cummins grid heater pulls 50 amps
*Both grid heaters reach "max" red/orange color at 30 seconds
*After 30 seconds the Yanmar grid heater ribbon deformed and remained deformed after it cooled.
*The Cummins grid heater showed no deformation after 30 seconds.

I was planning on using the Yanmar grid heater because it is a bolt in, but the element deforming after 30 seconds scares me. I am afraid it will eventually fail catastrophically sending pieces of heating element into the engine.

Is it possible you over-volted the Yanmar? That seems like a pretty significant failure of the design.

I wonder if it is designed to operate ONLY when cranking the engine/ when there is airflow? Just a thought, I have no clue if you were cranking the engine...

I guess that's possible. I used a commercial 60 amp charger / 300 amp booster on the 12 volt setting to power both grid heaters.
