Post subject:  What Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC-OBDII-OBD2)reader is best?

Hello,

I am still fairly new (I've had my jeeps less than a month).

I have been trying to sort out what Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) reader is best (as I plan to work on them myself I will need good tools).

I just ordered the MPPS Cable and V13.02 software for reading and updating the tunes.

I now need to get a good DTC reader. I have not been able to sort out what is being said about them on the forums.

It appears to me that none of the DTC readers read "all" the codes.

So my question is:

What is the best one (for reading most of the codes) and what others will I possibly need also (to read any remaining codes).

Thanks,

Mark

There are a number of threads discussing obdII readers if that's what your after. I just purchased the Innova 3100i where the i refers to the latest update I believe. It did read and produce codes but the code number needs to be checked against the liberty codes on this site, they are different in my limited experience.

I ordered an obdII wifi reader off amazon for $25 that apparently couples with the iPad or iPhone apps for obdII reading and diagnostics. Have yet to receive the wifi reader, together less than $40 . Will update in Dec.

GTO, Thanks for the reply.

I did look at the OBDII threads but I was not able to sort out what people thought is the best reader (or the posts on which ones they like are very dated).

I moved forward with internet research and found this:
https://wiki.ezvid.com/best-obd2-scanners

The number 1 rated was:
Actron CP9580A Enhanced AutoScanner Plus

I have ordered one and will update this post once I have had a chance to use it some.

Hopefully it will work well on the two jeeps I have.

Please note that I am not a mechanic but I have worked on cars off and on most of my life so hopefully I can figure out the scanner and give some good feedback.

Thanks,

Mark

As I recall most if not all of the less expensive aftermarket code readers if they work at all only read ECU codes (e.g. read engine codes not transmission or brake codes). FYI don't leave a code reader plugged in while driving as doing so can cause weird problems.

Wait, you bought two of these things within a couple weeks of each other?!

I am not sure about transmission codes as I have never had one, but Torque Pro for android with a bluetooth obd adapter has worked well for me.

I am hoping the reader I bought works for all (or at least most) codes. I will update this thread once I get the reader and have used it a little. Thanks for the tip about not driving with it plugged in. Sad that we can't but I did know that from the threads I did find.

Yep! I bought two of them.

One for on road (2005) and one for off road (2006).

This way I have a second vehicle when I need an extra one. I have a common system for learning to repair them and I don't need to balance my on/off road mods.

I know they are slightly different due to the 2005 vs 2006 and Limited vs Sport but still mostly the same.

I had one deal in the works but not completed when a second really good one fell in my lap. I believe they will be harder and harder to find and especially as low mile single owner (both of mine were) so I pulled the trigger on both deals and will get them fixed up and then get rid of my other vehicle (2001 Toyota Sienna with 290K).

Unless you know different I wouldn't hold out much hope on this. According to Actron themselves the level of support for our CRD is only:

Global OBD II Read / Erase Codes Command, Global OBD II Code Definitions

Which is provided by almost every scanner out there.

For other vehicles they explicitly list manufacturer specific Engine, Transmission and ABS Coverage

To get the the level of coverage you're looking for you need to be dropping $2K+ on a higher end Autel, SnapOn or even DRBIII.

Well curd!

Now I need to decide if I send it back and get a lower cost reader.

Thanks,

Mark

Will it do a quick learn on the transmission?

I have it , but I never tried this function , example in the trasmission can read the dtc and clear it but can't read the parameter , there is the quick learn etcc , but I have not tried for fear  , in the engine can read many many parameter and can act some test , like turbo actuator ,egr and other , probably can program new code in the key etcc etcc , there is the clone of the new Chrysler diagnostic too

Well... Here is the update on the CP9580A.

It is not going to work overall and I am sending it back.

Here is the detailed information:
It works for key on engine off reads of stored codes etc..
It does not work for anything with the engine running. When you have the reader plugged in and start the engine it gets a "Link connection" error. If you plug it in while the engine is already on it also get the "Link connection" error.

I called Actron Tech Support and found out that they support the non-CRD Liberties but not the CRD's.

So, now I need to do more research on readers and find one that will work for both engine off code reads and engine on diagnostics.

Thanks,

Mark

Yeti,

Can you provide a link to the Launch X431 you have as well as a link to the clone Chrysler diagnostic reader?

I want to be sure I am looking at the exact model you have for the X431 and hopefully not spend a ton of time looking for the Chrysler clone.

Thanks,

Mark

Innova and Autel both have models that work well with the CRD, including ABS/ESC and airbag modules and clearing all codes. I don't own either but have used ones owned by friends on both the Jeep and an 08 Ford Escape. I have no experience with Torque as I have no working smartphone.

I have the Innova and use it on my Toyotas, Dodges, Nissan and Libertys. It seems to work fine for me. I've used it with engine running and even while driving to get a freeze frame of when the code was set under what conditions.

I have this Autel MD802:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0090 ... UTF8&psc=1

And it will read and clear codes on every module in the KJ. My DRBIII can do every module in the 05, and every module in the 06 EXCEPT the ABS computer and IIRC the BCM.

The Autel also works on the Diesel WKs perfectly.

Ideally I would like to find and aftermarket tool that supports all the OEM programming features that the DRBIII did such as ECU replacement, programming keys, etc.

That would be wonderful!
