Post subject:  Please Help... crank, but no start. RESOLVED

Hi All,

Noobie and have had a CRD 2005 for about a year. Has 55k on it and have just fitted the weeks kit 1 & 2 and new intercooler hoses. Was running great for about a week, but just died on the driveway.
Wife started it and then it died after 10-20sec.
It now cranks but wont fire. I downloaded codes and got many, some of these I am assuming are due to the not running condition and others due to the weeks kit.
The red round LED is lit up along with many other amusing lights and stays on (doesn't flash). I take this to mean the security thing has an issue or there is a wiring fault. I have swapped ASD relay and checked fuses and all looks OK.
Have looked at wiring behind fuel filter head and all looks OK.
Battery is on charge.

Is there anyone in the Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA area that is recommended for tracking down the fault?

** Fuse16 was blown. replaced it and it fired straight up. Not sure why is failed or whether it will fail again, but for now all is good.
Many thanks for the pointers and understanding of how it works and what to look for (though I feel a bit of a prawn for not checking this one earlier.
Beardy
Thanks Mike

Once you get the battery fully charged, turn the ignition on and see if all the lights return to normal.
If the red dot turns off see if it will start and run.
If the red dot stays lit you may have a problem with your key programming or SKIM module.

Try a different key if you can. I had a key go bad. The chip inside it died.

Typically, if you try and start it without a programmed key the CRD will start and run for 3 seconds before shutting off.

Cranking and not starting is another problem.

The round red LED is for the SKIS anti theft system... the chipped key is read by the SKIM module that sits at the top of the steering column and has a wire"loop" around the key entrance to read the code off the key. This code is sent to the ECU and if the ECU is happy with the code then the red LED goes out after a few seconds and you can start the Jeep.

If the ECU is not happy with the code received from the SKIM module then the red LED flashes...you can start the Jeep but it will die after a few seconds.

If the ECU is happy with the chipped code it received from the SKIM module the ECU will energize the ASD relay to enable starting. However, the ECU expects to get feedback from the ASD relay that it, the ASD Relay, has energized. If the ECU does not get this feedback that the ASD Relay has energized then you get the red LED on solid...the engine will turn over but not fire....I had this problem on my 2002 Export CRD.

You can pull out the ASD relay and jumper pins 30 and 87 together inside the Relay socket and see if the LED goes out and the engine starts. This means that the wiring going to the ASD relay has a break in it...either the +12 volts or Ground going to the ASD Relay coil or the +12 volts that should be going through pins 30 and 87 is broken on either side of the relay.

I ran for a few days with pins 30 and 87 jumpered out inside the ASD relay socket before I had a chance to fault find the wiring...found that the one lead going to the ASD coil had a break in it somewhere so I cut off both ends of that lead and replaced it completely with a new one.

So you need to get hold of a Multimeter and fault-find if the ASD relay is getting power and if the switched +12 volts through the relay is getting to its destination...escpecially to the ECU!

Download the Service Manual for your year KJ here...includes the circuit diagrams:

http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ

On these circuit diagrams page 8W-80-62 gives you the pinouts of the ECU Connector C2....pins where you expect to see +12 volts when ignition is ON (Fused ASD Relay Output) are:

Pin 1 Brown/Pink
Pin 3 Brown/Pink
Pin 5 Brown/Red

Check on the ASD Relay Coil pin 86 that you get +12 volts and pin 85 should get switched to ground by the ECU Connector C2 pin 44, Brown/White.....check this with reference to the Red battery terminal.

The ASD circuit you want is page 8W-30-25

Best way to measure these voltages while the ECM has all its plugs connected and ignition is ON is to wrap small sewing needles or pins onto the meter leads so you can piece the insulation with them...patch the holes later with some glue!

If this is a bit much, take the circuit diagrams to an Auto Electrician to try find the problem
