Post subject:  New head need help setting things up right timing question

So couple years later after finding the dealer didn't change the water pump and ruined the head, broke all valves I finally got everything needed to get the crd repaired.

Problem I know the crank is not at tdc and the injector pump is not lined up.

How do you get the pump where it needs to be? After putting the pins for the crank and cams.

There is a mark on the inside timing cover bracket at about 8 o'clock right next to the bolt hole. Then there is a little indent on the outer part of the pulley

The timing isnt set with the engine at TDC. Its actually 90 deg ATDC.
Pin the cams and crank, set injection pump, and you will be good to go for putting the t belt back on.

If the head and intake are assembled, then put the cam pins in to lock the valves safely out of the way of the pistons, to find TDC, I used a wire coat hanger down the #1 cylinder injector hole . I turned the crank until #1 was at the top then found the timing mark on the crank. Then turn the crank 90 degrees past top and you've got the cams and crank timed. You can try to install the pin for the pressure plate to lock the crank, but in my experience the crank wont move unless you move it. Visually, the crank bolts should be perfectly vertical and horizontal. Turn the fuel pump to its timing mark and everything should be set to install the timing belt.

Once you've installed the belt, the crank bolts should be perfectly vertical and horizontal with the cam pins in. If you've done it right, you should be able to remove the cam pins, turn the engine via the crank around back to 90 past TDC and the cam pins should go in. If you can't reinsert the pins your timing is off.

Just to add to that last post. After you get the belt on, remove the pins, and rotate the engine exactly TWO full revolutions by hand. Then make sure the cam pins go in without more than a slight bump on the crank one way or the other. You should be able to insert the cam pins by hand (maybe gloved hand) as long as the threads are in good condition. When you are "bumping" the crank back and forth to find the exact spot, you're moving it like 1/100th of an inch or so, as little as possible once you have one of the pins in place. It will destroy things if you put much pressure on those pins. If you can't get both pinned easily, then you're probably off 1 tooth, or more.

The fuel pump marks are really hard to see with the radiator and intercooler in place, as is the crank witness mark. And, you have to play with the fuel pump a bit as it keeps moving out of alignment. You have to lead the belt a tooth or so, in one direction or the other to get it lined up with the belt installed. Kind of a pain, but not too bad. Can take a few tries.

Doesn't the injector pump have two full turns per injection. So can it be one turn out of alighnment by one turn? Assembling and don't want to wrong

No. The injection pump runs at 2/3 the speed of the cams, and will line up properly with the cam pins on every 6th rotation - which is somewhat irrelevant. Just set it to the timing mark and make sure it stays lined up as you are getting the belt in, then everything will be good from there.
