Hello
I am new to this site and am hoping for just a little help please. I recently purchased an 05 CRD about 2 months ago off a private seller from Craigslist. From the trip home to now we've had overheating issues with it that I figured I could easily repair. So far done is MAF unplugged to turn off EGR, straight piped to reduce egt's, hayden 2905 fan, thermostat and most recent a couple homemade shrouds to go between thermostat, reservoir and turbo as it feels that's where the heat is coming from. It has plenty of proper clean coolant and only overheats when turbo boost is higher like at 70mph and when slow downed or idle it cools down pretty fast on its on. Question is new turbo or oiling problem to turbo, or something else? Also CEL was on that threw code P0101 before I disconnected the MAF sensor. Thanks in advance

Welcome to LostJeeps! I had the p101 error code a while back. Replacing the air filter with a new one did the trick for me.

Also, when you remove the air filter check the bottom of the filter box. If you have the stock intake tube that goes straight to the grill it is notorious for letting leaves and whatnot in.

Its not the turbo boost that is causing overheating, its the load on the engine.
So, are you towing a trailer, carrying a heavy load, or climbing a steep hill?
Exactly how hot is it getting? Is steam pouring out of the coolant overflow tank?
The temperature gauge is known to be mis-calibrated from the factory and there is a ECM update to correct the temp gauge calibration.
A $25 infra-red temperature gun is a easy way to check engine temps when it seems to be overheating.

Still, if its a light load, no towing, and no hills, 70mph creates plenty of airflow through the radiator. You could have no cooling fans at that speed and still remain cool.
Maybe coolant flow the problem.
Has the thermostat ever been replaced?

Yeah, I second the clogged air filter or tube, and the temp gauge update flash. It's probably not overheating at that speed, especially this time of year. If it really is overheating, and it's not one of the problems above, I'd be wondering if the water pumps plastic fins (stock) are broken, or maybe lots of goo from someone mixing the wrong coolant with the HOAT. I've seen white goo in one that had some mixing of incompatible coolants, maybe if there was enough of it coating the insides of the radiator it could cause this, but at this time of year, that's still unlikely...

Oh, maybe the intake is full of EGR soot. It can pretty much close it off until the engine can't run.

Thank you for the welcomes. To start it doesn't tow and no hills here. The MAP sensor is clean so no soot problem( EGR is inactivated at the moment). The air filter and intake are clean and as said did the fan and thermostat and drained and checked the coolant finding it to be the correct and good clean coolant. Guess I might venture to the water pump or rodding the radiator next. Do I have to go to the Jeep dealership to have the guage flashed or reset? Almost want to drop a all mechanical 3.9 cummins into it to get away from all the emission and restraints from the Italian diesel. Thank y'all and God Bless for no one here in the upstate of South Carolina wants to look at this or have it near their shop.

Also did buy a new coolant sensor, will install it tonight when I get home from work and update. I hope these post helps others who might have same issues.

Is it puking coolant out the bottle overflow after one of these highway overheating spells? Why the need for the coolant sensor? By that do you mean coolant level or temperature?

Well sir it is circulating back into the reservoir yes when warm, on the sensor it is the temp sensor that I purchased for only $11 for resoning of reading others had faulty sensors. I am doing all the small probabilities I can before going to something bigger. Thank you and all for your help and post

By the intake being clogged, I'm talking about where the rocker/valve cover meets the intake elbow, right about the EGR. disregard if you pulled that evil #%&@%$* and already scooped out all the black tar.

Basics first. Physically verify that the engine is getting hot by using a digital temp gun as already mentioned. Do this BEFORE replacing any parts or temp senders. You are simply guessing and wasting money and time until the root cause is discovered.

P0101 also points to worn rocker arms. This will lead to smoke issues, but not address the cooling problem. Could also be a failing water pump.

Can't tell you exactly what is causing your issues, but I had an issue with my radiator, being 10 years old in salt road conditions. Would only overheat in hot weather and towing, though. So for yours to be overheating, I would look deeper.

Mine was getting hot too. Changed the fan clutch to fix it.

Do you have a catalytic conv? If so, could it be clogged?
A stuck open thermostat can cause overheating, too.
