Well, been spending more time with my CRD lately, but not the good kind. A week ago as a winter storm was moving in we had a wind storm with estimated 100mph winds. That wind picked up my camper, turned it over and landed it on my CRD and another car parked in the driveway. I was able to free the cars by jacking up the camper (still upside down) and rolling the cars out. Jeep seemed to have mostly cosmetic damage, dented hood, front brace under the hood bent a bit, grill broken, and the like. No leaks or other weird noises when I started the engine, so I parked it to the side and waited for better weather to head down to the body shop.

Well on my way down today, I could tell something was off. It started just fine and sounded OK at idle, but whenever I pushed the go pedal in, the engine would rev up to ~2000prm then die back to 1500 without letting up on the pedal. If I kept on the pedal it would continue to cycle like that, up to 2000 for a sec or two then back down to 1500. Fortunately it was almost all downhill on the trip so I mostly coasted. One other odd thing was whenever the engine was rev'd up, it made an air rushing noise. At first I thought it was the heat/ac fan coming on but it was just in the engine compartment, not in the heat ducting. No engine lites. Idles great but can't rev to more than 2000rpm and then cuts out quickly, and makes this air wooshing sound when rev'd. The guy at the body shop listened to it around the engine while I rev'd it, and he said it sounded like it was sucking air somewhere??? (or maybe blowing air)

None of these problems were there before the camper fell on it. Since this happened on the way to the body shop, I have not had time to get under the hood and check things out (but the body shop is very good about letting me look around and even tinker a bit with the mechanical stuff).

I thought I would ask here if these symptoms sound familiar to anyone. My first thought was one of the air hoses came loose or split. That might explain the wooshing, not sure if a hose off after the turbo would cause the ECU to shut down the rpms when rev'd like I was seeing. Other possible things I thought of were a mouse or the like making a home in the intake path someplace (unlikely unless they ate thru a hose to get in). Or perhaps another vacuum line coming loose or being eaten thru.

What do the folks who know this engine think? Do these symptoms point to anything that I should check first??? Ideas???

TIA

If the front crossmember is bent / dented, then it is entirely plausible that the intercooler's plastic end tubs have been broken. There are mounting tabs that stick out from the plastic, and any stress on these could easily crack the pressure chamber of the intercooler.

I'd look there first. Follow the new damage and inspect anything nearby.

Thanks Geordi, Will check that out first.

Any thoughts on whether a leak in the pressurized air tubing might cause the lack of being able to rev and the air whooshing noise? Or am I looking for multiple causes here do you think?

You typically would see a massive cloud of smoke following you when you have no ability to boost, but it is also possible that the computer didn't see any change in boost level and was cutting the throttle on you anyway, rather than overfuel so much.

Its hard to say, but since you had something change, I'd go with the source being related to the most recently-installed features of your CRD as being related to the problem. Anything else is just a wacky coincidence, which while possible... Would be highly unusual for the timing.

I second broken intercooler. Same happened to me after running my CRD through a telephone pole. Body shop took care of everything, or so they thought, and upon first test drive, heard the whoosh, couldn't even see the crack, no CEL

Just to close this thread out, it was the intercooler. Based on the suggestions here, I told the shop to check the IC and they found the problem. Replaced with a dealer part and power is back to normal. And it looks good too with the new hood and body work.

Overall the shop did a nice job. Pretty thorough as they also ended up replacing the AC/trans cooler which were dented too.

There does seem to be a smell of diesel fuel that wasn't there before, I'll have a look around this weekend to see if there is anything obvious there.

Thanks for the advise.

Likely sources of a diesel smell are the return lines (fittings are all plastic) or the return block (plastic) or the drain on the filter / the filter itself. The filter and drain though would be allowing massive amounts of air in (vacuum fuel system not pressure) so that is less likely unless you have installed a lift pump of some sort.

Glad you got the intercooler sorted out.
