Post subject:  Front electric fan needed?

When i did the timing belt i found my front crash bar(behind the bumper) was pushed back far enough that its hitting the fan. I was able to pull the fan out but it wouldn't go back in, and i was in a time crunch so i threw it all back together without the fan. Leaving Friday for a 2500+ mile trip from Ohio to southern Florida, maybe down to Key West. Its been a while since i did the TB, and so far i've had 0 issues with the Jeep getting hotter than nomral, even with some 60-70* weather. Its going to be 70-80 in Florida, but i doubt i'll be running the A/C much so i'm not concerned about keeping it ice cold. Will not be towing.

So should i try to get the fan back in, or is the mechanical fan plenty to keep the engine cool? Used to my 7.3's where i can run all day without any fan at all and not have any issues, as long as i keep moving.

As long as you still have the engine driven fan you should be ok. The electric fan is mainly for the AC and while in slow moving traffic.

I removed my engine driven fan and use electric only.

Without the electric fan the AC won't work properly; may cool some but not much and may overheat (the AC not the engine) which may or may not damage AC system components. I'd try getting the fan back in, you may be able to pull whatever is in the way forward by tying a rope/chain to a stationary object and backing up gently. If you cannot get the fan back in a) don't run the AC and b) check you Owner's Manual for vent settings that trigger the AC compressor even if AC is off (only one that I am sure does not in bilevel)

My Jeep overheated this summer for the first time ever while sitting in bumper to bumper traffic while my AC was on. I looked under the hood, and one of three shops I had work on my Jeep had completely cut the cord to my fan. I've had two dealerships and one private shop that I trust work on grounded wires over the last 11 years of ownership, so one of them must have done it without telling me. I can't use my AC now unless I'm moving or the Jeep will overheat. I went this whole summer turning off my AC when stopping at a light or in traffic and then turning it on again once I start moving. I won't let my wife drive the Jeep in the heat because there's no way she'll remember, and she'll never see the temp gauge climb until it's too late.

Be careful. You may want that fan back in. It seems to affect my Jeep now that it's disconnected.
