Moving on the tackling the next 'issue' with the 2006 CRD. When I purchased the vehicle last fall the ESP/BAS light was on. The previous owner had it in to the dealer for repair. They indicated a new clockspring was required because the steering angle sensor had failed. But the part (68271255AB - was AA before some change/improvement) was on backorder, for over a year. Sounded a little strange to me, but I checked with several local dealers and all had the same story. They had a list of customers waiting for this part which in fact had been on backorder for over a year. And just to make things fun, the part is unique to only the 2006/2007 MY and now has a list price of $652 ($457 online).

I am doing some searching for a used one. But wondering if any of you have had this issue (with the ESP/BAS failure) and did the clockspring fix the problem? Also, other than heading to a dealer, how do I get the code(s) cleared and the light reset? The Palmer Performance code software I have does not read the BCM codes (or reset them).

I'd try to find one at a junkyard; shouldn't be more than $10-20. Only thing is, you don't know 100% for sure that something from a junkyard is good.

I don't know anything about ESP/BAS stuff but I will warn you the factory service manual give clockspring installation instructions that are wrong; your new or used clockspring will be destroyed if you follow the directions. This may account for the shortages and backorders. Every dealer tech that follows the directions will destroy at least one and look bad to his boss who will pass the spendings on to the owner. A real lucrative money maker.

The book calls for an extra turn after the blue marker shows in the window. Big Fat Lie. Don't do it. It'll check out fine until you turn the wheel all the way when you'll hear an expensive plastic crackly sound as the tape-wire in the clockspring tears itself apart haveanicedayspendmoney. Just another day in the jeepdaimlerdodgechryslerfiatmercedesbenz experience.

Mine is an '05 so it doesn't have some of the bells and whistles that came later. Cannot understand how they would involve the clockspring. There's no spring; it's a misnomer.

Good luck and happy clockspring.

My 2006 Parts Fiche shows the clockspring as:

56010619AC (BNB).....don't know what BNB stands for
5604488AC

2005 Parts Fiche shows:

56010688AA

I recently replaced my clockspring for my 200 Export CRD...knew it was failing as Air bag light would come on when turning to the right!

Dealer said that original part had been replaced with 56010688AA which was for all models.

I somewhere have the 2007 Parts Fiche...will have a look there.

The new clockspring that I received had a white plastic pin locking it into position...instructions were to not remove the pin until the assembly had been fitted into place....easy to fit...price from dealer $220. which is not bad considering shipping costs.

Edit to add: Cannot find my 2007 Parts Fiche but www.factorychryslerparts.com/products has the part listed as 05156106AD for $225.76

It is my understanding that the 2006 & 2007 use a different clockspring because it contains the steering angle sensor which is feed a signal to the ESP. And if the ESP system fails it takes the BAS with it because the stability system runs thru the ABS system. I confirmed this after searching for a long time in the factory SM trying to find info about the ESP/BAS warning light. Eventually found the info contained in the brake portion of the SM (page 462, section 5-225). But interestingly you then have to go to the restraint section of the SM to get the removal/installation procedures, because the clockspring carries the signal for the airbag and must be replaced if the airbag deploys.

Also, searching online it appears part number 68271255AB has superceded many previous parts. It replaces all of the following:

56010619AB, 56010619AC, 56010619AD, 56010619AE, 56010619AF, 56010619AG, 56044886AC, 68271255AA

Anyway, I am going to attempt to find a used one. But as the second poster noted there is no way to know if the used one if good or not. And I still don't know how to reset the trouble code(s) so I can get the lights turned off and actually see of the used part fixed the problem. A google search on the ESP/BAS light seems to highlight a number of common issues -

1) Corroded wires under the driver frt carpet (confirmed not an issue on my CRD)
2) Warn/frayed wires coming thru the firewall shorting out (don't believe this is the case, but need to confirm)
3) Bad clockspring (that's what the dealer had concluded and had it on backorder when I purchased the vehicle)
4) Brake/ABS control module (I am really hoping this is not the case - will make the $450 clockspring look cheap)

Could be warn/frayed wires coming thru the firewall...the 2006 LHD CRD has a known problem of the Fuel Filter Mounting Bracket clamping down on the wire harness behind it...you need to remove this bracket and ave a good look at the harness in that area as it could be damaged and shorting to ground or to some other wire nearby.

For the 2006 CRD they moved the mounting position of the Filter Bracket a bit because the ABS pump or something was bigger...they did not notice that now they were damaging the harness in that area. I have yet to see someone from Chrysler/Jeep actually owning up to this problem yet I have seen many posts where this was what was actually causing all sorts of weird problems! :?

Autel MD-802 will connect to ABS ESP BAS, read and clear codes. Works fine on my 2006 CRD.

What are you using to read the codes?

Rankom - interesting. Will be curious to see if the part fixes your problem.

And here's another interesting one. I was up at GDE earlier this week to get the CRD flashed with their EcoTune. They are great guys, and took the time to read the BCM codes for me. Confirmed it is in fact the steering angle sensor (in the clockspring) that the BCM is producing implausible data. So I resigned myself to having to either gamble on a used one or pay the $400+ for a new one. Then magically the next morning the lights went out and all has been well since. Hmmm....

Well lights came back on. Not a shock. Frankly wondering why they went out for a couple days. Anyway, thanks for the tip. I have a new part on the way.
