OK,

I need to delve into some fantasy here...

Does anyone know if the Libby powerplant and tranny will fit in a Wrangler circa '98 or so?

I have thought about doing a total swap, engine, tranny ecm, tcm etc into a wrangler....

Since most of these engines now have 100K plus, is it a fools mission?

I know the 4BT sticks up way too high...

Yep, it'll fit. Somebody already did it in one of the mopar or jeep type magazines.

I mean I'm pretty sure they were in the early 2000's tj in Europe so I don't see why they cannot fit in a 98.

I've thought about this as well. I was thinking someday I would do an SAS but why. It's probably easier to just swap the motor into a wrangler sport and make a much better off roader. That, and these Libertys are gunna be borderline worthless in a couple of years so you might as well pull the driveline and push the rest off a cliff.

Edit, I may have made up that they had em it the tj. I'm not positive if they did.

I am sure it will fit I put a 351 (V8) in a 1972 Ford Pinto. As far as price they will bottom out here shortly but the ones in good condition & maintained will start going back up. The older they get the more money they will be worth. It well all depend on how you take care of it. Just look at the going price of a GOOD ford Pinto.

"Good" Ford Pinto? You can use those words together?

Takes some work, but eventually those words will fit together...

Personally, for an older Jeep, I'd go for an engine that doesn't require a whole bunch of electronics.
Yes, a 4BT is tall and heavy, but an older Mercedes turbo diesel would work great.

X2 on the Mercedes. Just talk to Dougbob on here about how much fun the swap is. Plus, the mercedes engine will go half a million miles, ours have yet to prove themselves, or maybe they have  :dead:

There was an article that got the engine and transmission from a crd and put it in an old Cherokee.

I'd also go with a Mercedes engine, it's so much wiring and computers that you'll go nuts to fit a crd engine in a tj. Plus there are kits available this, from adapter plate, engine mounts, etc.

I think that guy may have messed some up... He directed the positive ccv straight to the oil pan, no provent or similar device. That's bad...

But I almost moved the om617 to a Cherokee... Got the ram EcoDiesel and sold the Cherokee. Still have the 82 300sd. Pretty good engine, torque curve is a bit in high rpm, but still good engine. No electronics other than relays and sensors, I love it.

It's been done on both TJs and XJs.

How are your fab skills? How good are you at reading wiring diagrams?

I've posted a bunch of information in my swap thread. I suspect this is just a pipe dream if you are not handy slinging a welder and reading circuit diagrams.

They were not.

In Eu, they had only liberty/Cherokee diesels in early 2000, right? That's what I remember though.

XJ had a 2.5 VM diesel starting in 1994?ish, older XJs(and MJS) had the Renault 2.1TD.

In 2002 a whole new engine by VM came out, 2.5 for the manuals and 2.8 for auto a little later.

2005 saw the version we have, 2.8, which was mated to both auto and manual.

For a short time there was a military version of the TJ sold with a diesel built out of Cairo, the T1.

If you happen to be the military head of your own state, you can order a new J8. Diesel JK pickup.

Putting the CRD powertrain into a LJ (Unlimited TJ) is on my life's to-do list. Nothing about the swap scares me. Real estate certainly isn't an issue. An inline 4 is smaller than an inline 6 any day of the week. There are businesses that can do the wiring harnesses. The computer system would be the biggest hurdle, but anything can be overcome.

Maybe Jeep will just make such an awesome diesel next-gen Jeep Wrangler that in 15 years I'll buy one of those and not mess with the swap. But I doubt it, because the new one will come crammed up with all kinds of emissions and unnecessary technology.

I guess I am talking total swap - not just engine but Ecu tcu all wiring etc.

Why not? I mean what else are you going to do with the wiring?

Sam can tell you more but one thing it needs to interface with this the dashboard.

Go here to see what vehicles of the past were available with VM engines, you'll be surprised.
