Hi I am trying to remove the knuckle on a 2006 Jeep Cherokee KJ (Australia) so that I can install some new front lower ball joints. Can't seem to find a good guide on how to do this. From what I understand, I have to remove the hub and push the shaft through with a gear pulley. The are 3 special nuts behind the hub, and I wasn't sure if these needed to be removed, and what socket to remove it with. I have posted this at the below link. http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/sho ... p?t=143353 Any help or a pointer to a guide would be appreciated. KJ75 |

You dont have to remove the hub. Just remove the nut on the end of the axle and separate the upper ball joint and tie rod end. Then press the axle out through the hub (some penetrating oil helps a lot). Then separate the lower ball joint. After all that, you can then press out the old lower ball joint and press in a new one. Thank you for the Youtube reference. Sounds like I have to apply a lot more penetrating oil and purchase the gear puller. |

Be aware that pressing out and in the lower ball joint is no easy task. For the axle end, I loosened the nut till it was even with the end of the axle, held a piece of wood over it, and beat it out with a hammer. |

Knuckle removed and ball joint replaced. I applied heat for a few minutes, that made removal a piece of cake. Used a ball joint press to install the new part. Image of new ball join.

Those bolts are E-Torx, If I remember correctly 14mm. I always replaced them when I replaced wheel bearings but they are something like $7 USD each where I am at, they are kind of easy to damage if you are heavy handed in their removal.\. Make sure you torque them down good when you get the entire hub back on the jeep or they try to walk back out. |
