Post subject: | Engine issue please help |
Hi all. Well update I have now changed the timing belt.. serviced the truck completely ... however I have an issue.. when I get somewhere for example shopping I come back to the truck and try start it and it just turns over... nothing like no fuel getting through. .. I have resorted to opening all doors and closing them. Arming alarm and then un mobilising it.. then wiggling all the wires under the hood to the sensors etc.. and eventually turn it over and boom it's on... normally first turn she starts.... any ideas? My old man said fuel pump.. google said key transponder (I ain't got a spare) also some threads say the MAP sensor or the crank sensor... to be honest this was all happening before I changed fuel filter etc. .. in the Bowl on bottom was a slug like substance. .. so may be fuel clogging... but I fear it will return.. Any advice what to do.. how to check if it's one thing etc. .. Oh no warning lights nothing saying error etc .. Cheers chaps |

I'd vote crank sensor, especially since it sounds like it happens mostly when it's hot, or warm. If you end up replacing it, make sure the heat shield is in place, as people love to not reinstall it, because it's a pain, and then the heat kills the new sensor ![]() |

UKJeep wrote: My old man said fuel pump These didn't come with an electric fuel pump from the factory, just the mechanical injection pump that's driven by the timing belt. UKJeep wrote: google said key transponder If the key transponder is bad, you'll see a red dot illuminated in the lower-left area of the gauge cluster while you're trying to start it, and even then, it'll normally start, run for two seconds, and then shut off. Crank position sensor definitely sounds plausible. |

I agree with others; bet it is the crank sensor! One of the few things we have seen on this forum that goes bad and does not set a DTC (check engine light) ![]() |

hmm, that's a good question. I think it's on your drivers side on the side of the block very close to where the transmission adapter plate mounts. basically center from top to bottom. You should be able to access it from below. I think it's the same block as the 2.8 right? |

UKJeep wrote: ok next question. . On the 04 cherokee 2.5crd where is said sensor. Here's a thread with a bunch of engine pictures: viewtopic.php?f=98&t=74594 Open this, hit Ctrl+F (to open the search tool in your browser), and type 'crank position sensor' to find the pictures showing its location. Keep in mind that when they say "passenger side", they're referring to a left-hand drive Jeep, so that's probably your drivers' side if you're in the UK. According to VM Motori, the 2.5 and 2.8 "share all components except pistons, liner and crankshaft." source: http://www.vmmotori.com/r-428-dohc/auto ... ohcen.html |

cool, yeah, I'm hoping the bottom end of our engines is as solid as the other variants. I wonder if the marine version had an iron head, might be a nice reliability upgrade. I also wonder if they exported any of the marine engines to the US? I guess if they didn't have a turbo, it wouldn't be worth it. |

I read hear eons ago that VM engines were available in the US in Mercruiser IO's. Do a google search and you'll finds lots of chatter about them. |

Update... so I have changed the sensor... and well.... what a f@$$in job... in the UK the steering box and so on is in the way. ... the sensor is between manifold and turbo... oh and I ain't got hands like a fairy .. needless to say I had to take of the down pipe... bend some heat shielding and smash my knuckles in.. what should be a 1 min job turned into 2 hours... pfff... oh and to top it off the bolt was a Allen key head... had it been a 10mm easy... pfff... On a plus side I got to inspect all turbo pipes and so on and everything is Smashing... Anyway I will update should my issue dissappear Regards |

hmm, adding the steering and brake booster to that side would add a little more fun to the job for sure! Congrats, I bet you'll be able to get the groceries home before they get too warm now. |
