Post subject:  Sensors

Hi, I am having issues with intermittent starting on a 2.5 CRD 2004 Model KJ.

Basically it starts first time every time in the morning, then when I get somewhere it wont start! It turns over and over and over, then 10 - 15 mins later it starts. Now its starting to affect my starter motor and battery.

When I got the jeep i Never had any issues, then I followed the Noob guide and cleaned the MAP sensor. and so on.

When I googled what could be wrong it mentioned "CAM Shaft Sensor" and "Crank Shaft Sensor". I am no mechanic as previously stated and mainly use this forum on my phone.

What do i need to replace, where is it and where is the best place to get the part from? Please bear in mind im no super mechanic, and Im in the UK

The truck is really starting to get on my nerves now. So much so I have looked for a new car....

If this is a simple quick job then hopefully I will keep "Frank"

Cheers guys, your assistance and patience with me is appreciated.

I think you already asked this question in a previous thread.
Most of the replies indicated the need to replace the crank sensor.

Personally, I would check for air-in-fuel first.
Air in the fuel line will make it hard to start.

Bear in mind that most of us on this forum are in the US or Canada and have little to no experience with the 2.5L engine. We only got the 2.8L
Most everything is the same but there may be a few small differences.

Hi,

Yes I did post it elsewhere, however I am being more specific now I guess... I have heard 2 sensors being mentioned, 1 is the Cam shaft, and the other is the Crank shaft. Are they the same? do they mean the MAP etc etc

Im looking to replace said faulty sensor but dont know whats what if that makes sense?

Forgot to mention, I have changed all filters, Cam belt etc.. I dont think there is air in the fuel, It runs sweet as a button when cold started, I drove it 650 miles last week, to Germany and back. It started happening in germany! I thought at first because I had just filled up with German Diesel :!: , I sat turning it over for 10 mins then boom, Ran fine, I then drove 300 miles, Ran perfect. Parked on the Ferry and woke up next day, got in her and boom she ran... Only now when I go shopping (I think he hates shopping :-)r ) Does it do the Crank over for 10 plus minutes then works.

I have the EU 2.5 CRD, so My fuel filter holder is nothing like that in the guides or other posts, I have a screw thing on top, Unscrew and its a pull up push down handle, When I do so The bowl at the bottom starts to swish,

All the symptoms to me and other posts I have read aim at a faulty sensor....

However with bloomin one? :furious: Its starting to get on my nerves a little as I sold a good solid Car to get this 2 weeks ago, Now worrying I bought a lemon!! oh and spent like £500 on since so the missis is Proper P%$sed
It happened today, I drove to the shops, came back didnt work. I tried the primer handle thing, It was hard to push, I sprayed cold start it made it run for a second then died out.

5 mins later bruuum.... Started and drover perfectly.... I got home switched off, tried to start and fired straight up!!

Help please lol!

If your check engine light is on, you can connect up a code scanner and see the trouble codes. The trouble codes might help you determine which sensor, if any, is bad.
Otherwise I would consider the crank sensor as the most likely culprit.

Thanks Flash,

I have no Lights on. So I suspect crank?

Would the Cam shaft give me an error code?

I would never spray starting fluid in a diesel motor ever!!!! That being said, if you did this and it tried to run on the spray as you stated in you post, then you got a fuel issue!!!!
Starting fluid would not make a difference with a bad sensor!!!!

:ROTFL: the reason I sprayed said spray was because the break down man gave me a tin and used it and it worked. I have an old boat with a lister engine in and it works a treat on there too...

SO Update: - Finding parts in the UK is pants!! I finally found a Crank sensor (£70) and will be here Wednesday!

Fingers crossed it will fix all issues and I can get on with other projects I plan :-)

Can someone answer my question also please??

Will a CAM Shaft sensor through up a EM Light or a Error code? or is it as silent ninja as the crank shaft sensor?

Also downloaded the manuals, will print (At work lol) and get to it.

Cheers for advice!!

Camshaft sensors normally give a code but as they are an electrical component, they can also be difficult to diagnose. I recommend replacing the crank position sensor as a first starting point considering your jeeps particular symptoms. Good luck!

Post subject:  Re: Sensors

The crank sensor doesn't seem to put out a code when it starts to malfunction. It is a pain to get to so changing it takes time - about 1.5-2 hours and preferably in the dry! The cam sensor is a doddle to change and is to the rear top left of the engine as you look into the engine bay. Takes about 10-15 mins and a lot of that is moving cable runs out of the way and back. Basically if you get to and remove the MAP sensor, you can do the same to the cam sensor.

Remember that these vehicles are starting to get on, so we're at the stage where the sensors have been working for years and exposed to multiple heat/cooling cycles in what is a very crowded and hot engine bay. If you ever look in the engine bay of a Series 3 Land Rover for example, there looks to be enough room to sit in there! In the engine bay of ours, you can scarcely get your hand in! Its not surprising that some of the sensors etc are at the stage where they need replacement.

Do you have a code reader that will show you the sensor data? A good code reader will, if you have a no start when hot look at the ca and crank sensors. If one indicates TDC and the other does not then that one is bad.

You could also do this if you had a portable ocilliscope and we're ready to connect it up to the sensor when you have a no start.

You could also buy spares of each and swap out one when it does not start, camshaft would be easier I think.

You could also put a heat gun on one of them and wam it up and see if you have the same issue.

It sounds like your ecu is not reading the engine as in sync. When the engine ecu is synchronized it will have both came and crank readings to be able to accurately place the crank angle. The crank angle is needed to fire the injectors. Without this your r injectors will not fire.

Look into the above and report back.
