You may need to use two levers in there - one to lift the long spring off the pawl and allow the adjuster wheel to rotate.
They should self adjust again assuming they aren't frooozen ad year model (I think).
Not disagreeing by any stretch but you might also like to try:
(I hope this makes sense:)
Find a clear space on a 2-3% slope perhaps to allow the vehicle to roll backwards slowly out of gear:
- whilst rolling backwards (hopefully with an observer) you know stress the safety element......
crank the e/ brake or handbrake handle up and down in rapid succession whilst holding the locking button on to prevent it locking in the up position - maybe 6 to 8 times whilst moving slowly rolling backwards out of gear .
Don't be gentle with the in-cabin lever when you pull the it up quite firmly on each successive lift. It needs quite a jerk.
Trial it to see if the number of clicks is reduced to operate the e-brake.
The handle should progressively lift less high with each action of lifting and lowering.
If the mechanism is working it will stop adjusting after 3 or maybe 5 clicks on the handbrake operating lever ratchet and pawl at normal adjustment height.
This may need to be repeated a few times if its never been done and if you have auto-adjusters.
Hopefully you won't have to pull the rear wheels off.
Best of luck.
