Post subject:  dealership pulled 10 codes, now it won't start at all

background: have been experiencing some sort of limp mode lately that comes on out of nowhere and completely goes away by turning the Jeep on and off. took the Jeep to a chrysler dealership that handles diesels with the hope of simply getting codes from it. they say it might take a day before they can get to it. the next day we get a voicemail that says they pulled 10 codes but now the Jeep won't start at all, just cranks. they insist that all they did was pull codes.

codes:
p0101/p0100 (maf has been unplugged for years)
p0672/p0673/p0674 (the 2/3/4 glow plug circuits)
p0234 turbo overboost condition
p0513 invalid key
p0093 fuel system leak detected
p0615 starter relay circuit (probably because I've bypassed the starter relay with a momentary switch in the cab?)

when I showed up today to check it out, I planned on bleeding out any air that might be in the heater head (that has happened before if it's been sitting for a couple months, but never for only a day) and noticed smoke coming from the heater wires (key was accidentally left in the 'run' position while I was priming if that matters). fantastic. so I stopped all research and decided to head home and regroup and ask y'all for advice on where to start, both with the no-start and the original limp-mode thing.

more background: we've already experienced the steering column no-start issue and installed an aftermarket pin. even with that new pin, the Jeep would occasionally not crank (almost always associated with the sun beating down on the dash). that's why I bypassed the starter relay. been working fine that way for a couple years now. I have no idea if the replacement pin has broken again or not. also the ABS system has been down for a few years now.

The heater element in the filter head likes to melt itself which then causes air to get into the head. My guess is you have air in there. Just unplug the heater wiring for the time being and check to see if there is fuel coming out of that plug around the pins once you do get the air bled out.

My guess is the limp mode may be happening due to overboosting. This is usually related to something wrong with the vacuum control system for the turbo or possibly stuck vanes in the turbo itself.

"p0513 invalid key "

If someone tried to start it with the wrong key or a unprogrammed key, the engine will crank but not start.

the details of the "limp mode" experience is that the accelerator pedal will feel fine for the first maybe 1/3 of its travel and then be completely dead the rest of the way. as if the rheostat inside had a dead spot. I was hoping for a simple bad pedal code, but no such luck. when it happens, it's usually while at a stopped like at a light.

I have no idea what true limp mode feels like so I can't verify that is what it is.

next trip over I'll be bringing the spare key, just in case the other one doesn't work.

That sounds like limp mode to me.
Its either the Overboost code or FuelSystem leak code that is causing the limp mode.

bleeding it did the trick. but also showed I need to replace the old style filter assembly. fuel is squirting out the heater plug when I prime it. :( and if fuel can get out, air can get in. we were on borrowed time with that thing anyways, I guess.
I had them delete all the codes so as to see if that overboost one comes back.

also got a few thumbs-up from the guys in the loading area while I puttered through. she can still turn heads. :D

Until you can get and replace the fuel head; unplug the fuel heater, spray the socket clean good with carb or brake cleaner, blow it out and then pack it full of RTV automotive silicone sealer and let it cure out for several hours. This should hold you till you can get a new one. Think seriously about installing an intank fuel pump, it cures all air inleakage problems...

I believe Seth (Saskuatch Parts) is working on selling an install kit?

new unit is on its way. :D I'd like to do the lift pump too, but the AC just went out on the cruiser and that takes priority. maybe later this summer.

on a side note, I've never seen dealership people so terrified in my life. I drop off my running Jeep to get some simple codes and then it completely breaks down in their hands. they let me fix it myself on their property and didn't even charge me for the codes. they just wanted me gone :-)r

You will find most stealers do not have a clue about these vehicles. LOST is your very best friend when it comes to knowledge and repair!!!!
There are horror stories shared on here of what some of the clueless dealer dummies have done to these little diesels due to lack of knowledge....

I'm going to be honest here ., when i saw this motor , i got confused too . dealer technicians didn t get training on this motor , they think this is a gas motor. It kind of looks like a (FIAT 125 or 132) TWIN CAM design from late 60 s and yes 2017 fiat is coming back with spider 124 . sorry guys its off topic but but i grow up with FIAT
