Hello,

I am installing a Provent 200 and want to do the "Drainback".

I was looking at the Fumoto drain valve to try to find the correct size/model of Fumoto (still have not found that) but I ran across this thread that talks about a plug at the front of the oil pan that is not for any sensors etc..
viewtopic.php?f=98&t=83989&p=890868&hilit=fumoto#p890868

Has anyone used this for the Provent 200 drainback? Would it work for that?

Thanks,

Mark

Must drain back below sump or else you have to use check valve or else you will have main seal leak eventually. I went down this route and decided that it was simpler to just provide your own drain bottle which you can empty every oil change.

If the port at the front of pan is useable for this I was going to use it and use a check valve.

I have not looked at this yet I just read that article that I linked.

Thanks,

Mark

Simple solution:
Install a drain tube out of tygon tubing from the bottom of the Provent down to side of the frame and add a small ball valve at end of tube. (both available at hardware store) Drain it once a month or at least every oil change into a small catch container.
Simple, clean, and not worth the hassle of having to make a penetration into the oil pan....
I noticed that after the Provent install, the drainage became less and less over time. I now only get about 1-2 ounces when I drain...

Agreed.
Easiest way to do it.

Why would the volume decrease over time? Is that due to the condensation filter becoming less effective and more of the mist getting back into the intake?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark, your idea to install the drain back is the best. That port can be used. But it is inconvenient, as everyone here with provent stated.

To do the drain back you should use a braided steel oil hose with pfte connectors as this setup is the most robust. If you install a regular hose and somehow that gets rotten or pinched, you risk loosing the oil in the pan, depending on where the hose will start leaking. This is a failing point that would not worth, since you risk damaging the engine, hence I would recommend using pfte and braided steel oil hose.

If you don't want to go this way, which I believe is best and most professional looking, then just drain the oil under the jeep, keeping in mind you need a check valve to allow your oil out of the provent but prevent suction in the provent, this when you may have negative pressure in the provent unit. I have no problems dropping few drops of oil on the road, if you do though, you can have a catch can of your choice downstream of the check valve.

Regarding volume decrease over time, this is only valid if you don't add any oil in between oil changes, at some point you'll get to the half oil mark and the oil blow-by will be reduced substantially. It looks like the oil drain through provent is reduced drastically at about 1/2 mark on the dipstick, based on my observations.

The Provnet is not really a condensation filter, but a coalescing filter...and I do clean it good with brake cleaner at each oil change.
Wish I had a good explanation for this, but I do not. It may be as thermorex stated as the oil level gets a little lower you get less blow-by, but again I am not sure of this either due to the fact it does not seem to vary much even after a fresh oil change with a full 7 qt. fill up. When I first installed the Provent filter I seemed to have a lot of blow-by, as time went on with the deletion of the EGR & FCV systems and the addition of different tunes the blow-by seems to have gotten to be a lot less....
Maybe running Royal Purple 15w40 diesel oil has also played into this improvement as well as it is a slightly heavier weight oil than the 5w40 Mobil 1 Turbo diesel oil that I was running... :?

During cold weather I get water and oil discharge the upon draining the Provent. Unless you are in a dry climate I would not recommend the drain back connection.

I clean mine with gasoline. Now that I have the ram EcoDiesel, that pos throws a code as soon as there is a tiny pressure variation between inlet and outlet, so I had to get creative. Every 1500 miles I need to change the provent. Gasoline so far is the cheapest way to clean the oil from provent and it also worked great. I should probably ask gde to make that pressure threshold a bit higher, but I keep forgetting...

I would do an oil analysis of the blow by to make sure is only oil. I would think blow by also contains fuel and other undesirable particles that will be carried to the lubrication system with a drain back. A couple of years back I read a thread or two besides the one you linked here of people attempting the same mod; it would be nice to hear from them or read follow ups but I have not been able to find the threads.
Good luck.

I totally agree! The stuff I drain from the provent is not something I would want to pour back into any motor....

As I know, the filter should capture the liquids, and only oil should go through the drain. If somehow water escapes through, since the density of water < density of oil, that water should evaporate due to oil temps.

Hmmm....I have a check valve and just let it drain onto the ground. In the garage I have a floor pan to catch the drip.
