My Liberty has about 95,000 on it now. I bought it at 60k. a 299 Turbo under boost code was on,, when I bought it and still on, sometimes in the winter it goes off for a while. Had it to a steelership getting the tranny fluid changed and told them to check that code. I have reset it many times and it always comes back on. They just reset the code and didn't wait long enough for it to come back in as it ussualy does. I have pressure tested the hoses and inter cooler, drop test and there is no leaks. I am at a loss as for what to check. Also the fuel mileage used to be 25-28 mpg,,, and now it is 23 mpg. air filter new fuel filter new, push hard on the pedal and black smoke. I suspeck the injectors are failing. I could get them tested but if thier life span is 100k I may as well replace them, other than the fact they are around $380 each. I would like to know what is normal life span for them, and what else to check for the 299 code. Any help would be great. O'' I have the Green Diesel Eco Tune, after I bought it. Dennis |

Where are you located? Let me save you a ton of money: You have a boost leak somewhere, your injectors are fine. Do not spend any money on the injectors, it will not help you. FYI: Neither will the dealership, they are the last place to ever take a CRD. I have worked on more than a half-dozen that have been returned to their owners by dealerships... IN PIECES. Half the engine in the cargo area. Now, about your CRD. Having the GDE tune is great, but that mileage is dismal. Have you had the timing belt replaced? You are WAY overdue on the age, and the mileage no longer matters, but you would be just about there on that too now. I can most likely resolve your boost leaking issues for you with a visit and an evaluation while the timing belt is replaced - that is one of the two main services I offer. I would suggest however that the bigger service is performed instead, as I suspect that your boost leak is from a failed EGR and dealing with that is also part of the larger package. The full service I offer is: Installation of ARP studs to cure a guaranteed head gasket leak that your mileage is just before the typical range where it appears - the "low coolant light" is the first indication that this leak has appeared. The studs are a permanent fix. Replacement of the original style rocker arms. Many CRD owners have had these fail individually on them, and I now believe it is due to an older design that was not reliable in the presence of EGR soot. The new design is much better. Installation of an EGR-elimination elbow kit, which also offers some performance benefits Installation / replacement of the factory ceramic glow plugs, which CAN AND HAVE caused several complete engine failures. These are VERY dangerous and a poor design. The replacements are metal-jacketed ceramic that cannot hurt your engine if / when they eventually burn out. A full timing belt kit and water pump replacement - Doing this is certainly suggested anyway, but if you plan to do anything else on this list other than just the elbow, the labor has to be duplicated and another timing belt needs to be installed. They cannot (should not) be re-tensioned. This is a long list, but it can be done in (usually) just one day of downtime, and then your CRD is all set for the next 100k miles (on the belt) and far more on the other components... Lots of happy miles in your future! Shoot me an email (button below) and we can work out the details if you are interested and we can go from there. The main thing I think you need right now is the elbow kit, that will immediately resolve any potential boost leak as the EGR is not a positive-seal device. |

A P0299 can be caused by a dirty MAP sensor, a bad vacuum control solenoid, stuck turbo vanes, or a stuck open EGR valve. Its easy to remove, inspect, and clean the MAP sensor. Definitely need to change that timing belt sooner rather than later. |

I had a similar intermittent 299 code after some work I did. It turned out to be a crack in the vacuum line going to the turbo actuator. I bought some hard emission tubing: http://www.dormanproducts.com/p-32436-4 ... in=keyword and replaced the line. The rubber connectors pulled off the factory tube with a little bit of effort. When I was looking for the problem, I checked that tube a few times, and it took me quite a while to notice the crack. Mike |

A real quick and easy fix until you can install the Weeks elbow kit which eliminates the total EGR system or Geordi gets his hands on it, you can install a block off plate to eliminate any boost leakage back through the EGR valve and disable any EGR crud being dumped into the intake manifold. I ran my CRD for well over a year with this block off plate installed to eliminate the EGR crud being dumped into the intake before Weeks came up with the elbow kit... See this thread for block off plate dimensions and instructions on how to install: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=76576&hilit |
