Today I received the two front axles for replacement on the CRD. 134K on the clock, and I believe the CVs are bad.
I was surprised to see that one of the axles has a female splined end.
Is this correct?
Just want to make sure before I get it all torn down and then find out I have the wrong axles.

Also, with a lift of 2 1/4", do you think the collars inside the CV joint needs to be machined off a little?
The plan is to keep the lift at the present height, but you never know in the future. Do it then?

TIA.

Since this is my DD, I need to get in and out with the CV replacement.
I have not yet replaced the CV on a half shaft, so I believe there will be somewhat of a learning curve.
Plus, I am having trouble finding the correct, good, CV joint to replace them with. 6 ball cage. Maybe someone on here can point me in the right direction.
And, if I need to machine off some of the CV collar, this might take some additinal time.
Replacing the whole axle will give me a little time to get this done.

Any replies regarding the first post greatly appreciated.

I believe that the female end is for the passenger side as there in an intermediate shafts that is male on both ends connecting the CV to the differential. Maybe someone else will chime in.

WolvereneFW is correct. You will probably have to replace the intermediate shaft due to either 1) you won't be able to separate it from the outer shaft or 2) it will be worn the splined joint with the outer shaft. Best have one ready to go.

Where are people getting new CV axles from? I got one form rock auto several months ago for my right side one and it clunks really bad. I'm thinking it is not sized correctly.

Thanks,
Drew

I got some from EMPI, but comparing and contrasting they appeared just slightly shorter to me. I kept the originals and I intend to have them rebuilt at some point. Now that Napa doesn't do the REMAN, it is a problem. I believe Detroit Axle (?, I found their name on the forum here) said they will rebuild them but you have to ship them and receive them back.

Got mine from the Jeep dealer (including the intermediate shaft) but they weren't cheap. They fit fine even with the lift.
