Just thought I would share this tip. I have a 2005 CRD with 158000 miles and do all my own work on it. Recently the starter began dragging, turning at about only half the normal rpm's. Hooking up to a 200 amp charger only improved it slightly, so I knew it wasn't the battery. I removed the starter and opened it up prior to getting a new one. I was amazed that the starter worked at all due to the amount of oily crud there was around the brushes and commutator. That area of the starter was about 75% crud and 25% air space. I disassembled the entire starter, cleaned it in the solvent tank, and cleaned the commutator and brushes with emery cloth. The brushes and commutator were in very good shape. Reassembled with grease and oil where needed and reinstalled. The starter is back to working as normal. So if you have a failing starter, you may want to look inside before paying a lot on money for a quality replacement starter.

Yeah, I'm pretty much old school. Grew up in my dad's Richfield Service Station in the 50's and 60's. Most people now aren't old enough to remember when Gas Stations worked on cars and available food was chewing gum and a soda machine.

Hmmm might be worth a clean up as part of the weeks and provent I have done. Im sure others would do the same. Any chance for a walkthrough with some pics. Could come handy to us "not so old school" weekend warriors

Boy I wonder what mine must look like inside. It's covered in crud and oil from a mysterious leak for the past seven years. It's still turning over though. Well until I typed that last sentence. I'm sure it's failing in the driveway at this very moment.

You bring up an interesting point - like any rare older vehicle we sometimes have to go old school.

At what point will we be sourcing brushes and bearings to rebuild these things ourselves?
