Sometimes my CRD will stall after putting into gear right after starting. The motor stalls out like one with a manual transmission would if the clutch were let out with the brakes applied. It only happens once in a while, and when restarted, there is no problem. I used to think it was air in the fuel line, but I have a lift pump now. Thoughts?

That's one of the symptoms of drainback in the transmission. Let it run for 30 seconds or so before you put in gear. For me, it's just enough time to put my seatbelt on and start my music.

The problem is most likely in the front pump, the plungers are worn and sometimes one can stick causing this type of problem. Add an extra quart of ATF+4 as it sometimes seems to help with this issue. Low fluid level can cause fluid foaming at startup and this seems to aggravate the stalling issue....
Mine did the same thing till I got the front pump and TC replaced... Till I got a new front pump & TC, I learned to pop it into neutral anytime I was coming to a stop for the first 1/2 mile or so till it warmed up....no more stalling at stops
