The electric cooling fan motor on crd#1 died. Blew a couple of fuses then when totally open circuit. A new replacement unt is pretty pricey, does anyone know if the motor is shared with other DCJ vehicles?

I see that the gasser has an option for a 3 wire fan, but it looks very different from ours. I wonder if the motor is the same, or if some other cheap junkyard motor might be the same.

According to Factory Chrysler Parts, FAN. Cooling. Electric. . "Air Conditioning" part no. for 2005 diesel and 3.7 gas are the same: 05143021AA

This is the fan I ordered. Removed the motor from new schroud and bolted up to the old CRD's schroud.

Although I have never done this on a CRD...

In the past I have been able to fix fan motors by disassembling the motor, cleaning everything, filing the commutator, adding fresh grease where needed, and putting it all back together.

Bingo thanks for the confirmation, I had been wondering if the 3 wire gasser was the same. Now I know.

I'll see if I can find an OEM at a junkyard and if not order up that new aftermarket.

For this, looking at rock auto I see 3 pin connector with hd cooling and 3 pin without hd cooling. I know the crds came with hd cooling packages, so I assume that we need the hd? Only ask as their is like a $60 difference in price. I don't tow regularly, but when I do it is usually at the max weight.

I have a related question. My fan will work for a short period of time, and then it blows the fuse again. Does this sound like a failing motor, or am I most likely dealing with a wiring issue? I've had 6-7 wire rubbing issues in this Jeep.

I was preparing to dig into the wiring harness to look for a break, but I'm curious to know if it could be my fan motor. What would I be looking for? I may need to replace the fan too.

Thanks guys.

As best I could tell the HD was 3 pin, and the non HD was 2 pin. This is what I saw from several sources online.

Mine was doing the same, get out a multimeter and check the resistance of the fan and do the math. V=IR, or in your case you need V/R=I

Where V is your system voltage(usually 12.4), R is the resistance of the fan motor, and I is your current. If it looks like its close the the amp rating of the fuse then its likely the windings going out.

I have the 3.7L gasser but I think they use the same rad cooling fan as the CRD.

I've had problems with mine that resulted in overheating conditions.
My rad's electric fan has two speeds, the connector has three lines and isn't hard to test. Either the motor seizes or the windings go open or short.
I was able to find a replacement from my local wrecking yard but that lead me to two problems.
#1 the replacement motor was crap, but between the two motors I was able to make one functional one. That's the risk of using used parts.
#2 be aware of the direction of pitch on the replacement rad fan.
I seem to have discovered two different pitches, two different rotation directions.

I know why they use the electric rad fan on the Liberty,
to increase the fuel mileage. But has anyone ever tried to add the mechanical clutch fan to a Liberty that didn't come with one from the factory?

My Liberty came c/w the trailer package so it has both rad fans.

I don't know much about the gassers, are you saying that yours with the tow package has 2 fans? Is one mechanical and one electric? Or are they both electric?

pictures?

Yup, a two speed electric rad fan and a mechanical clutch fan mounted on the front of the water pump pulley.
The rad fan shroud is different too. It wraps about the mechanical clutch fan.

Okay, dumb question. I have a multimeter, and I've certainly checked my share of plugs in the house, but it has occurred to me that i would have no idea how to check the fan while still plugged in. Am I unplugging the fan and then plugging into the two wires on the plug to check resistance?

I checked the lo and hi relays, and there does not appear to be any burning or corrosion, so I'm thinking there's a grounded wire, a bad ground, or a bad motor.

Resistance is always checked with the circuit unpowered.
So yes, unplug the fan.
The fan motor should have three leads. It's basically two fan motors in one.
One of the three leads is common/ground.
The other two are for winding 1 and winding 2.
You would be checking resistance between the common lead and each winding.

PT Cruiser electric fan motor (rad fan) is the EXACT same motor as the CRD. Save yourself $300 and hit the wreckers.

Great to know, probably other vehicles at the wreckers to rob one from.

Downside to the PT cruiser is being seen taking parts from a PT cruiser.

My fan crap out as well so I just install a new motor from the PT cruiser.

the motor is a 1/4" too thick but still fit good with a little shim behind the screw. it seem to work correctly but I'm not sure how the 2 speed works , when I tested it with a battery I found the 2 winding ( blue wires ) going the same speed.

do you need both relay activated for the high speed ???

someone know exactly how the fan circuit really works ?

The motor is a Napa # M79872 (75760) and it was a little under 100 cad !!

The electric fan has two windings.
Activate any one winding and you get low speed.
Activate both windings and you get high speed.
