This site seems to have all the info one needs to own one of these trucks. I was a diesel mechanic and fuel systems specialist for years with certifications from Bosch, Stanadyne, and International as well as holding many ADS certs I have let expire since I left the field.

What are these CRD's worth ? I found a 2006 CRD with 120K miles non-runner. Owner states it shut off when going to work and never would start since then just clicks when attempting to start. He wants $1500 for it. Whats the opinion on value here ??

The #1 question to ask is if the timing belt was changed prior to failure. That answer impacts every other decision in the process.

Worst case: you could part it out for a lot more than $1500. Also, if it was the TB failure, you can get a set of replacement rocker arms from the UK sent via Royal mail to arrive stateside in a week-ish (done it). If opening up that much, then go ahead and replace the stock TTY head bolts with ARP studs (the TTY bolts are considered a weak spot), and replace your stock ceramic glow plugs with steel 7v units.

With some sweat equity and parts, you could potentially have a good CRD for chump change.

I felt like it was a solid deal even if it gets parted out. I read the NOOB guid and it made me think these little motors are built well. Thanks for your input just looking for some confidence to go put this thing up wednesday evening as its a 3 hour hike from the house.

The Liberty has a 2.5" lift and 31" wrangler Duratracs on it with like 75% tread left. It looks clean.

If that's the one in deleware, then the timing belt was changed 20k ago and the guy told me that is loss power for a short while and then died. Imo, it's well worth it

I always hope and start with the easier things, like air in fuel filter or just a clogged filter. It's hard to guess without being there and looking at it

Are you throwing any codes on it?

Note, if it says something about injector leak, it is more than likely to be a fuel filter needing replacement. When mine needed it, I'd get codes for "Massive fuel leak", when it was just that the filter couldn't pass fuel fast enough.

Check boost hoses, vacuum line attachment at turbo, intercooler health, etc.

And the rocker arms and cams could be f**ked, if proper oil changes were not done. I just had to replace all the rockers on a 2006 Liberty CRD that only had 52K miles on it because the original owner thought is was more important to throw money at decorative crap (installed winch bumper, light bar, lift kit, snorkel) and thought it was fine to foregoe routine maintenance...like oil changes.

Good tips! Once I get it and give it a once over I will post an update. Do you guys know if Autoenginuity works with these CRD engines ?

Autoenginuity works, but it is a massive waste of money. Everything is look-but-no-touching on the sensors and options, and you have to buy their system twice b/c the "generic" plug is a requirement before they will sell you the "enhanced" which is.... exactly the same thing again. It also cannot pull codes from anything other than the generic OBD code list, and can't even reset headlight timing or door lock preferences in the BCM. I don't know what the benefit is for their system at all.

A power loss and now a no-start bothers me. That is also how a couple members have had valve failures, including the engine I am currently tearing down for a rebuild. It could get expensive quickly.

I currently own autoenginuity the enhanced options for GM, Ford and Chrysler as a shop tool where I work. If it will get basic thats ok to pull codes but it sounds like viewing

If it turns out to be a basket case and the valve dropped is your confidence pretty high I could part it out to recoup the cost of the truck? I am not worried about my time as it is not a huge deal to me to have something to tinker with.

It seems as these engines are sleeved that they were actually meant to be rebuilt unlike some small diesel engines that are toss away and buy new as they cant be bored much if there has been a gouge to the cylinder wall.

I am in the process of re-sleeving a cylinder from a valve drop right now, so if an idiot with a collection of hammers can do it... Someone with a shop shouldn't find any difficulty.

If you've already bought the AE stuff, then at least you aren't buying it specifically for this vehicle. I did, and was supremely disappointed after coming from the Vag-Com level of interactivity with the computers. Depending on what has happened, if you were to decide to part it out you should be able to easily hit $1500, it just may take time to do it, time that you will spend with a lawn ornament that maybe you don't want to spend. Again though, having a shop is a benefit b/c you can break it down to the good stuff and dump the rest as a rolling body.
