I have a 2005 Liberty CRD. Has been down for about 2 years. Have had head work completed, new lifter/rockers, turbo, timing belt kit. Finally got it all back together. It cranks fine but seconds after it starts I get “No Bus” on the instrument cluster and of course no gauges work and all lights are on. Turbo does not engage maybe like it’s in limp mode? Any ideas out there? Bad FCM? PCM? Skim module? I am very anxious to get this issue fixed.

Did you check that all the grounds are installed and clean and tight?

As far as I know. I did relocate the grounds beside the FCM to the ground lug on the firewall. This Jeep has been down for 2 years however. I bought it a year ago and tore the engine down to the block as the #4 lifters had broken and it was parked. During the year before I owned it the battery had drained and gone bad. I installed a new battery as soon as I took possession. I assumed the ECU was good because I was able to program the Yeti Stock tune w/EGR delete. Not sure though if that could mean that I may have a bad FCM and did not know at that time. It is strange that the engine will start and idles perfectly. The mileage goes away after a couple of seconds after starting the engine and no bus appears, all of the check lights come on and no gauges work. If headlights are turned on everything just flickers and dims.

It is also worth noting that I did start the engine prior to tear down and it was happening then but at that time I didn’t realize that it was a communication error. I’ve learned a lot in the past year lol. Is it possible that letting the battery slowly die could have damaged the FCM?

What codes have you been able to pull?

The FCM is just a "passthrough" gateway, it does not care what the voltage is as long as there are no high voltage spikes passing through it that could damage it.
Low voltage or little or no voltage should not have any effect on it's status or condition as long as you install a good battery that has the proper required voltage.

I pulled 14 codes…
P0299
P0102
P1267
P1265
P1263
P1261
P0107
P1189
P0113
P0118
P2294
P0193
P0073
P0101
I have erased the codes to run again and see what comes back… some of those I’m sure were stored from before the rebuild ..

One thing I did find is that the connector for the water in fuel sensor had been twisted to the point that one of the wires broke and may have shorted together with the other. I repaired the connector. Not sure if that could have caused this problem?

That in itself could cause all kinds of problems. Personally I don't even use that any more. Too much of a PITA to unhook and I've never had a WIF alarm ever.

So maybe I should start disconnecting sensors like oil pressure and those that run through the FCM and see if there is a shorted sensor killing communication? Is there a specific fuse that could disrupt instrument cluster communication? It seems to me that if it were a bad FCM or a problem with the ECU the engine wouldn’t start at all.

Have you rechecked all of the grounds with a meter to check for good continuity? Why did you move the ground from under the FCM to the firewall? You could have just made another ground stud with a nut and bolt setup and sanded the paint to bare metal.
Still sounds like you have a ground problem somewhere. One ground I missed when I reassembled my engine was the ground by the TCM. There is a "U" shape bracket that has 4 big connectors on it, but at the bottom of bracket is another ground that I forgot to hookup...might look there to make sure that its good.

Where are you located, you don't have a signature listed?

Pulling fuses is not a surefire way of eliminating a bad sensor or wiring issue; only by disconnecting each sensor one at a time can you identify a faulty sensor.
But if it is a wiring issue, disconnecting sensors will be of no help in identifying a wiring short.
A good scanner could help tell you which communication circuit or module is down and then you could look at the wiring diagrams and see what sensors are connected to the bad circuit or module.
To properly diagnose a communication problem with the Can Bus, you need an oscilloscope to see where the problem lies.
See this:> https://www.vehicleservicepros.com/serv ... techniques

What can pull the communication (Can Bus) down and make it inoperative:
    1. short to ground of any of the communication circuits (wires) going to or from the FCM.
    2. any of the sensors that are connected to the FCM shorts to ground internally or if their sensor wire going to the FCM touches a ground or shorts to another wire in the wiring harness.
    3. a bad module or the FCM itself.

There is also another ground under the rubber flap on the firewall above the brake booster that should be checked along with the others already mentioned.

I am in Nashville, TN
I will get my signature completed this evening. I am also going to clean my grounds really good and see if that helps. I know the Water In Fuel and Oil pressure sensors go to the FCM. Do you know the others?

I think I found the problem!! An unraveling of a piece of black tape on the right fuel head connector revealed a scorched and burned in two red wire that has burned through the black wire and shorted…. Does anyone know what that is? Can I leave that off and start for a test? Obviously I’m going to need a new pigtail.

Black and red means you're dead. Those are the wires to the old style filter head heater. You're lucky it didn't burn to the ground! Your wiring needs updated! In the meantime cap them off and don't hook it up.

Wow! Ok thanks for the tip! Unhooked it and cut/ separated leads and still the same problem unfortunately… one more piece to the puzzle

You can download the FSM (factory service manual) from this online site, and it includes the wiring diagrams.

Index of /manuals/Jeep/KJ

This is the link for the 2005JeepKJServiceManual.pdf

There's an upgraded metal fuel filter head that won't melt where your burnt wires are. The melted plastic OEM filter head can let air into the fuel system.

Also wanted to mention that if your rig sat a long time. Mice love to get inside and chew on stuff. If it was never mouse- proofed you could have all kinds of chew holes. The little sensored word can get in all kinds of places. Don't ask me how I know.
