I haven't found a thread about cleaning the soot from the intake manifold, that should be fairly easy in my parts washer, but how do you clean the 8 passages in the head? Only thing that comes to mind is a toothbrush and a shop vac. Then repair the IMSDD ... Intake manifold soot deposit devise, aka egr, such that it no longer deposits soot in the intake. |

Thanks, I was concerned about getting crap in the cylinder, I checked the valves with my scope yesterday, interesting passages. Plan for the head was a full wash in my parts washer, I use oil eater brand solvent witx excellent luck, following drying in the sun shoot assembly lube into the oil passages and spin the camshafts to spread it, I've been using hyperlube. |

Soak it in gasoline. Then use a plastic bottle brush through the passages. Don't worry about the oil in the camshaft bearings, it will get there shortly after you start the engine. Just make sure the valve cover and cams are as dry as possible when you assemble them back. Doing an oil change soon after is not a bad idea. |

I ordered an oil change kit with my big pile of parts, I'm thinking of flushing it with cheap oil first, hopefully get as much soot as possible out. |

Parts cleaner hardly touched it, I dug around and found some powdered cleaner similar to comment, it worked wonders, what a messy job. I got a loop style toilet brush at the dollar store, it was perfect for the long passage in the valve cover, it probably took an hour to get all the corners. I've heard oven cleaner works well too. Always lube parts prior to assembly. Tomorrow I'll tackle the in head passages, I picked up a few more cleaning supplies today. |

The simple answer is Simple Green. For baked on crud the better answer is Pine-Sol. Cleaned 100,000 miles of carbon from my pistons with a 3 day soak and a tooth brush. |

That'll work too, I figured as long as I'm in here I'll go ahead and trim the ridges inside the manifold, it can't hurt. |
