My '05 CRD's transmission is slipping. I have 162,000 miles on it.

I have a spare transmission with 93,000 miles on it. What would you guys do? This car is my daily driver.

Thanks,

Tom

Are you saying the torque converter is slipping, or is the transmission itself having problems? :?:

Have you changed the fluid and filters?

Step one: Add more fluid. Start with a quart of ATF+4, and see if the problem goes away. If not, add a second quart and try again. If it still hasn't resolved, THEN look at other symptoms / options.

The transmission on these is enormous, and the dipstick is too long. It hits the bottom of the pan and turns, so the level indicator is actually pushed lower than it should be to register correctly. Anyone that keeps the transmission at the "full" mark is actually LOW. But don't worry, you could run this with many extra quarts of fluid and be fine, most of the space inside the casing is air. There is PLENTY of room for a couple extra quarts.

The transmission filters and fluid should be changed about every 40k miles.

WW,

Excellent question. This transmission has always had to "fill-up" before it would move. Does this term make sense? It sound like more of a manual shift car than auto-matic.
I'm guessing it's the torque convertor ?

Thanks,

Tom

Hello Jim,

The fluid needs changing so no sir, I haven't changed it and it has 15K+ miles on it since you did the head and t-belt
The dip-stick on this car has always worked its way out. Hence the too long issues.
I've read from your comment I think, that the 545 transmission requires 7 quarts with a change? Am I correct?

Hope you are well.

Best,

Tom

7 quarts is what the book says it should take, but the last time I did a change on a CRD, it took 9 quarts before I was satisfied with how it felt and drove.
