How do I know I didn't knock a rocker arm off when I reinstall the valve cover? It seems difficult to drop the cover straight down with the engine installed in the vehicle.

Take one of the long valve cover bolts to Home Depot and match it with two metric bolts from the store. Cut the heads off the two store-bought bolts.

You now have two locating pins for installation of the cover.

Use them in the center row, I usually use the #1 and #2 cylinder holes just behind the injector bores. This forces you to keep the cover above the rockers until it is centered over them, and you have to lower the cover evenly.

Ditto on what Geordi said. Once I have it set down I put 4 bolts back in and then put a cam bolt in and rotate each cam. You will be able to hear/feel if you have knocked one or more off.

I removed the cam pin and rotate the cam a couple of times to make sure everything feels and sounds right. then reinstall the pin before I move on.

For clarification, you are rotating the cam bolts (on valve cover) clockwise one full rotation and then putting the timing pins back in? What sound/feel am I looking for?

You can rotate the cams as many times as you'd like. Clockwise b/c that is how the engine rotates, and it will only lightly tighten the cam bolt into the camshaft. The pin or a set of vice grips are enough to hold as you loosen / remove the bolt after you are done testing it.

You are feeling / listening to the sound of the valves closing as the cam relaxes on each valley. The pressure should be even, that will mean you have all the rockers in the right places.

Got it. How much do you loosen the cam bolts when finished?

Well, I'm usually turning the cam with just the bolt, so I have to remove the bolt entirely to install the pulley. You can try putting it back without the pulleys, but I don't think the belt will work too well.

Got it. Without the timing belt cover on I didn't think about the fact that the pulleys go on there. Long day, thanks for the help.
