I am new to this forum.....have recently bought a one owner 2006 CRD with 174,000kms. It checked out great in the pre-purchase inspection and runs like a top. A few days after I bough it I tried to start it (after it had been sitting for 2 nights and days), and it started right up, then after about 30sec it went thud and died. After about 20 minutes and with the spare key it started. It continued to start right up for the next couple of days or so. Then, after sitting again for a night and 2 days, the same thing happened, started right up then thud and died. Now it will not start at all, turns over but wont start. The Sentry Key Security Alarm Indicator Light comes on for 3 seconds and goes out but there were a couple of tries when it was on solid...Any suggestions about what this could be? |

You're not alone. I am fighting the same problem. I though it was the ASD Relay. I replaced it and after the second shutdown, days apart, I used DVM to check relay, it checked good. So I am moving on to replacing CAM Sensor and possibly Crank Position Sensor as I can't remember if I replaced it, crank, when I did the head gasket. More to come.... |

The Sentry Key Security Alarm Indicator Light comes on for 3 seconds and goes out but there were a couple of tries when it was on solid...Any suggestions about what this could be? Sentry Red Led is supposed to come on for about 3 seconds when ignition is turned ON then the light should go out...this is normal operation and means that the ECM was happy with the SKIM code sent to it by the SKIM Module reading the chipped key just fine. If the light flashes at you it means that the SKIM code was not recognised...it will start up and run for about 30 seconds then turn OFF. If the light is ON solid then it means that the ECM is happy with the Skim code it received from the chipped key and the SKIM Module...ECM tries to energize the ASD but does not get confirmation from the ASD Relay that it...the ASD Relay..has in fact energized. Engine will turn over but not sart. So first thing is to swap over the ASD Relay with an identical one near to it....Blower Motor Relay should be the same or one of the Glow Plug Relays. Then check fuses 6, 15, 26 and 24 in the PDC...which is the same box as the ASD Relay is located...under the hood. I had the problem on my 2002 Export 2.5 CRD where the light was ON all the time...engine turned over but would not fire. Turned out the wire from the ECM to the coil of the ASD Relay had broken so the ASD Relay was not energizing. I temporary got myself going by removing the ASD relay and jumpered pins 30 and 87 together inside the Relay Socket. This worked fine until I had the time to trace the broken wire. So if replacing the ASD Relay and checking the fuses does not stop the Skim Light from being permanently ON then download the 2006 KJ Service Manual here....includes Wiring Diagrams: http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ Bear in mind that the LHD 2006 CRD has a known problem that the wiring harness goes behind the Fuel Filter Head Mounting Bracket and can be damaged in this area causing wire breaks or wire chaffing to the chassis. The wires you are interested in are part of this wiring harness so I would advise that you remove this Mounting Bracket and inspect the wiring behind it for any damage. If the SKIM light is not the problem then check for air in the fuel head or try to get some Codes pulled...cam or crank sensor failures are common problems. |

thanks for all this....as it turned out I ended up pumping the fuel prime pump a couple of times and it started right up...I think there must be a small leak in the fuel line which lets air in when it is sitting for a couple of days??? Anyway, so far so good...started up this morning right away after running the car yesterday. |

Many of us on this forum have installed a in-tank fuel pump to solve all air infusion problems in the fuel system... The in-tank fuel pump is highly recommended. Your Jeep is already factory wired for it with a relay and all necessary wiring except the two wires from under the back seat to the top of the fuel tank! Sasquatch Parts sells all the necessary parts for an install: https://shop.sasquatchparts.com/products/plug-and-play-in-tank-lift-pump-wiring-harness-for-jeep-liberty-crd/ Very Good Installation thread and writeup: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=37868&hilit |

Anyway, so far so good...started up this morning right away after running the car yesterday. Most USA CRD owners replace the standard Fuel Filter Head with the Raycor head...standard on the Export models like mine. There are lots of write-ups on this...read the NOOB Guide! One problem of the standard head is that the connector for the fuel heater can leak which lets air in and drips diesel inside the engine bay! The fuel line fittings from the tank to the fuel filter are designed for a pressure system not a vacumn system such as the CRDs use use so one needs to either replace the plastic fittings or fit an inline fuel pump as WWDiesel has stated so that the fuel gets pumped to the engine area and not sucked. The early Export CRDs such as I have do not seem to have this problem so much...firstly because of the Racor Filter head and also I believe the early Export models were made better...Chrysler started cutting corners once they started making the CRDs for the USA and Export markets in 2005/2006. If you continue having air-in-fuel issues then fit a Raycor Filter head and an inline pump...end of problems. |

Do you think the Canadian CRD is classified as an import? |

dstan wrote: Do you think the Canadian CRD is classified as an import? I think the Canadian KJ is pretty much the same as the USA models engine wise. The fact that it fires up fine after priming the fuel head would point to air in the fuel...check the NOOB guide to see picture of the type of fuel head you have. So I would fit a Raycor head if not already fitted and replace fuel filter. Fit an inline fuel pump as stated. Check Fuel is not contaminated. |
