I heard a load and different engine noise, the last few times I drove my 2006 CRD, kind of like a rattling. Today when I started it, it felt like it was missing a cylinder, very rough, no power, and lots of black smoke. Any ideas? Thanks I tried a search already.

Well, it certainly doesnt sound good. Could be:
A bad injector
Broken rocker arms
Or a broken valve

yeah injector is stuck open ,,, how to diagnose it , easy remove exhaust heat shield (COLD ENGINE) start engine grab IR temp gun must be done quick you only running it 2-3 min check which exhaust port getting HOT , that is faulty injector , or if you are so old school like me and like to make some noise in your neighbourhood , then you can remove exhaust manifold and cap turbo oil supply line , run engine and you will see excessive smoke from one of the cylinders.

Thanks guys I will check injectors

ok im suspecting one of them is bad , if any doubt about injectors , true test and only accurate test is BOSCH BENCH TEST , about 30$ to test them at fuel injection shop

Where can I get injector rebuilt?

nobody rebuilds them in north america only exchange unit go search nearest diesal fuel injection shop (bosch authorized) they will supply you reman injector you have to give them your old core. how did you identify the fault injector?

Seriously? There's a shop within an hour of me that did my Bosch 190s. Are the KJs that different?

ok i was told by many fuel shops in ontario and michigan , they don't rebuild them , but they can test our cp3 pump and injectors and offer exchange unit that they get from bosch . (factory reman) example my injectors came from bosch made in Turkey. if your neighbourhood fuel injections shop rebuild them , il like to have there phone number so i can send them my old injectors to be rebuild just to have some spare .

A member on here tore apart his stuck open injector and cleaned it himself.

There is a thread on it with pictures.

FYI: The only thing that lubricates the injection pump and the injectors is the diesel fuel passing through them; prevention of pump or injector lubrication problems can be prevented by adding a mix of diesel additive like Diesel Kleen and non-synthetic 2 cycle motor oil to your diesel fuel.
With the advent of EPA required ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel at the pump, it has very low lubricity properties!!! Many diesel owners choose to add these or similar products to their diesel fuel as cheap insurance to prevent lubrication problems caused by the low lubricity fuel the [EPA :frankie:] forced on us....

anyone caught tempering with that large retaining nut that secures injector solenoid , will face NO START issue , hmmm and how you going to calibrate that injector at home ? if he did that and engine runs ,I'm imprest

I have had all my injectors apart while trouble shooting. They all went back together and Jeep runs fine. If an injector is stuck open to return you, have nothing to lose by taking it apart carefully and looking for debris in the check valve up top. If you can't find something obviously wrong by disassembling it, get a new one.

well that is a good news , i like old school ideas , you are right why send the injectors out if we can calibrated them at home , save some money LOL

Electronic unit injectors, CAN KILL YOU!!!
Stupidly causing shorts with unit ejector control circuitry can DESTROY the drivers and coils in your ECM.

Disconnect electronic connector on top of injector.

Observe engine load and rpm by ear/sight. Observe smoke.

Reconnect injector.

Do one by one.
If rpm and sound does not change when injector is disconnected, injector is defective.

Some control systems require a ecu restart before the software will allow re use of the reconnected injector.

CP3 based control systems are pretty robust, i have preformed "cylinder cut off tests" on hpcr/ bosch cp3 and denso systems many hundreds of times by opening injectors (electronically) while engine is running. Without the correct electronic service tools, this is the best way to determine these issues. From Komatsu to doosan to deere, to cummins, if it has a cp3, this type of test works.

In my professional experience, with cp3 based engines, electrocution is unlikely, driver and coil damage is also unlikely. (never observed)
In the case of other designs (caterpillar non hpcr eui injectors for example) I would not ever recommend this type of test.

well i agree that is true . but i thought that we are taking this fuel system to the next level , the way i see it some people want to take a part injector in their home garage , trouble shout it find the problem , and do the tests , check and report if the injector automize properly check spray pattern , observe pressure , perform calibration ,, etc get the print out of the injector performance , and then put back in service . are we on the same page , or are we going to power wash there internals and put it back in service and hope for the best ?

Did we ever determine this is actually an injector issue? I admit I haven't been on this forum for a super long time, but I've read several threads describing symptoms like this, and the problem seemed to end up being a broken rocker or two much more often than a bad injector.

You say non-synthetic 2 stroke oil - I've heard ashless but never non-synthetic.

Why is that?

Why is that?

If you look at the different 2 stroke oils available today, you will see there are also a lot of synthetic 2 stroke oils available. The old school non-synthetic 2 cycle oil has different properties than the synthetic oils and I was instructed by a diesel racer friend to only use the non-synthetic oils to mix with the diesel fuel... Plus the cost of the non-synthetic oil is much cheaper when you are buying it by the gallon in bulk... :D
There may be more to the reasoning than I know and someone with expertise in oil chemistry would have to explain or comment!
