For 10 years my A/C has always been great. Ice cold, no matter how hot it is outside. It was hot today, about 95, but that's not too unusual. I went for a 75 mile drive and after about 15 miles it started getting noticably warmer. After about half an hour, I had the fan on high and the interior was still pretty warm. Air coming out of the vents was cooler than outside air, but not much.

We parked it for 3 hours, and when I drove it again for ten minutes it was cold. Maybe not as cold as it could be, but pretty comfortable. Two hours later when we drove 75 miles back home, it seemed pretty normal. Maybe not full cold, but it was night time so it's hard to tell. The car was comfortable the whole way home.

Any thoughts? What coud make it cool poorly, then cool pretty well again later on?

Thanks.

Could just be low pressure causing it to cycle too much.

Check your electric AC fan is working properly. Mine failed causing the AC not to cool well at all. It will blow a fuse when it fails completely.

Yes, this. Get the car hot while running the A/C and check to see if the fan is on.

I ran it for about ten minutes today and everything semed fine. Electric fan was running strong and air was cool. High/low pressure was 145/45, which seems about right.

Someone suggested that the clutch coil was weak, and removing a shim might help. Or replacing the clutch, of course. The clutch was working the whole time today, but it was a short test.

Anybody ever replace the clutch on the AC compressor? It looks pretty buried, under the engine and behind the fan. Is there an easy way to get to it? Is the clutch even replacable?

I'd much rather replace the clutch, without disconnecting anything, than replace the compressor and have to evacuate/chaarge the system.

Thanks again.
