Might be a bad turbo or a boost leak.

How are your oil and coolant levels?

White smoke is usually coolant, black smoke can be soot getting blown out (goes away) or overfueling / underboosting (doesn't go away)...

Where are you located?

There should be nothing leaking out of the valve cover. Not liquid or smoke.
Unless of course your crankcase vent hose is missing. Then that would explain a lot.

Dark black oil is normal for a Diesel engine.

well ask the previous owner if he was adding coolant , that would give us an idea , maybe head gasket?

sometimes , colour of exhaust fumes could be tricky to diagnose lol . but just to be on the safe side , pull the turbo intake hose and check impeller shaft for excessive play.
