If definitely is a preset temperature of either the engine or the transmission oil before the top gear & lock up can be utilized....just not sure which one is controlling...

I am a new member that needs help with my 05 liberty,v6. seems that the po has 140kmiles, states he must "heat" the trans/moter before driving, does this give any clue to the issue of the trans |

When the transmission fluid is cold, as in winter, the transmission won't shift into full top gear lockup until the fluid reaches a certain temperature which I don't have handy. Perfectly normal. In fact short of applying direct heat there is no way to "warm" up any vehicle fluids (brake, differential, transfer case, transmission, etc) short of driving and only marginal ability, especially in a diesel, to warm up the "engine" (e.g. coolant) other than using the block heater. In winter ideally one cranks up; shifts into neutral to get tranny fluid at least moving; idles for maybe 15 seconds; drives off at moderate speed until the temp gauge shows signs of life and/or the tranny shifts into full top gear lockup. Absent an identifiable "problem" the myth of having to warm up a vehicle persists. Before flaming starts the situation might be slightly different in the frozen reaches of Canada or Alaska. |

Best I remember, it took about 5 miles of driving in 20 to 30ish degree temps and the temperature gauge was about half way (10:00) between "C" and the normal tick left of straight up before mine would shift into OD Lockup... |

I wonder if the OP means that the trans must build up pressure "warms up" before driving. I've had two trans in mine and both of them must be idled for 30sec or put in neut and revved a little when cold to build up pressure from the drain back. |

Running the transmission overfilled helps with the drainback issues, I think it may prevent the air exchange from happening. As it is, the worst thing for a transmission is too little fluid, too much only becomes a problem if you manage to completely fill the case - since there is a vent tube, that is impossible, it would puke all over itself first. I'd try adding a quart and see if that improves the situation and if not, try a second quart. After that, then look to other solutions. The dipstick on these is too long (hits the bottom which is why it pushes out) and just about everyone is driving around with too little actual fluid b/c of that long stick. |

Correct me if I am wrong please. I know on gas engines that there is a preset temp the engine needs to get to before the transmission shifts into high gear. It's called open loop operation I believe. Is it the same with diesels? Once the engine warms to the preset temp, it goes into closed loop, and utilizes high gear if needed. |
