Yes we have a crazy long dipstick, mine is even worse since I got a Jasper replacement transmission, my engine cover is over top of the dip stick but this keeps it from popping out.
So this is how I do It:
1 drive Jeep to heat up fluid to operating temp, I never trust it cold 2 park on level ground, place in Park or Neural with park brake on!! leave engine run 3 open hood, remove cover, 4 pull out stick and wipe, reinsert 5 pull out stick check that fluid is with in the add and full marks for HOT fluid. I disregard any little bits of fluid higher up and only look at what fluid is consistently on the stick from the bottom up
6 put stick back if its full your done, put engine cover back on/close hood. if you need to add then you need to wait a bit for all the fluid to settle down the tube before you can get an accurate reading again.
