LOST JEEPS :: View topic - Fuel Filter, how often

The previous owner had installed a lift pump, but I think it's not functioning properly.

I tend to agree with Ceearedeedriver. As long as you have a spare, it might actually be safer not to change it. It's no fun chasing down air leaks. I've gone well over 100K in my VWs on one fuel filter.

Here's my PM Schedule:

Oil - 5000 Miles - Napa Gold 51515 Filter / Rotella T6 5w40
Air - 12000 Miles - Napa Gold 2329
ASD Relay - 12000 Miles
Fuel Filter - 15000 miles - Napa Gold 3647 - Every 3 oil changes, just put a tick on it with a sharpie each change

I've not changed mine since 2010. Having already worked through AIF issues I'm of the opinion that touching anything between the tank and CP3 has potential to set you up for a world of aggro. If it's working don't touch it. Of course, I'd change it out if I had symptoms that suggested it was restricted in any way.

No offense taken, Thermorex. The VWs are a bit different - they had a seperate waste vegetable oil tank and filter. So basically I have two redundant fuel supply systems. If either filter ever clogged, I could drive home on the other system. But they never clogged; I guess we get pretty clean fuel. The only time I ever had to change a filter was because of gelled diesel or algae growing in the WVO tank. I've never clogged a diesel filter.

So I feel pretty comfortable going 40K on the Jeep, but I do carry a spare, just in case.

I bought a 2006 CRD back in February. Been driving since March. Put about 10,000 miles on it. How often do you guys change fuel filters on these? I was thinking every 20k miles or so. I feel like I've lost a little bit of throttle response at highway speed.

Sam's CRD newb guide has some good info...though I don't see a basic rule of thumb for mileage (I know there's no magic number as it depends on driving conditions and what not), but I'm still interested to hear you guys' takes.

I go about 30k miles on mine. Unless I somehow get a bad tank of fuel. Then its sooner. Be sure to check for air in fuel. Adding a lift pump helps.

Appreciate the replies. It's my first diesel, so I'm trying to get a handle on the quirks of being a diesel owner. The previous owner had installed a lift pump, but I think it's not functioning properly.

Should be every other year, or 20k miles - sooner if the diesel in your area is not that clean.

I agree with others, every two years at least unless you happen to get hold of some bad fuel! Err on the side of caution!!! What makes you think the lift pump is not functioning properly?

Turn the ignition on. If the plunger on the fuel filter is hard your pump is working.

Best is to read wwdiesel post in the tech forum, and install a 2 micron filter. If that's not feasible for you, I'd advice to follow the manual, I believe it states 20k service, as Lancer said.

Knock on wood, I never replaced it so far... I wonder if you can have other issues if the relay blows up. It's not that's expensive or whatever, but I'm just curious.

No offense taken, Thermorex. The VWs are a bit different - they had a seperate waste vegetable oil tank and filter. So basically I have two redundant fuel supply systems. If either filter ever clogged, I could drive home on the other system. But they never clogged; I guess we get pretty clean fuel. The only time I ever had to change a filter was because of gelled diesel or algae growing in the WVO tank. I've never clogged a diesel filter. So I feel pretty comfortable going 40K on the Jeep, but I do carry a spare, just in case.

After all its your vehicle and do what you want regardless... Worse case you'll realize the fuel is clogged and change it. There is a guy on ram EcoDiesel forum that went 107k and never changed the fuel filter, then he traded in the truck for a new one. Lol. And he's also mechanically inclined. I've noticed the filters get blackened out, not sure why, even after 10k. Of course, I believe the fuel these days is cleaner than few decades ago. Unless you have bad luck to fuel from a cracked tank with lots of dirt and water...

No flame intended!!! I agree with the approach, even if I keep postponing installing the 2 micron filter... I gotta get to it one of these days. I may pull the trigger and get a Carter pump and relocate both filters under the rear bench seat, since I really don't have any space left in the engine bay... Side me babbling around, a 2 micron filter will definitely extend the life of the cp3 ($1200-ish at idparts.com) and injectors ($1200-2400 depending if new or reman). Definitely worth the addition. And also, do not ever run out of fuel, this can damage the injectors and cp3. Always fill up, when possible, at quarter tank, cp3 cools with fuel.
