Looking at stocking up on oil and Valvoline Synpower 5W-40 reduced 50% ($29 for 5L), and it meets the ACEA A3/B4 specification.
I have disabled the EGR at 124000KM, and currently have 136000Km. I am located in Australia QLD.
From the research the oil is similar to Mobil 1 5w-40.

Anyone used this in their CRD 2.8 or any thoughts ?

Hi

Big discussion here http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=64456&start=20 that I digested before plumping for a 10W40 oil here in the UK. There's fair bit of to and fro in that thread with purveyors of doom and naysayers forecasting dire consequences of using xWy grade instead of qWz grade.

My handbook says 10W40 for temperatures between -10C and 35C (2.8CRD UK Export Model)
5W30 where temp drops below -10C
5W40 where 5W30 unavailable below -10C

Above should all be diesel oil rated at ACEA B3/B4

My only thought on a 5W40 is that Google suggests your average lowest temperature there is 15C and your highest 25C (really! Our HIGHEST average here is 16C in July/August) so the 5W part may be a little thin during your hotter times? However a bit more Googling suggests that this would not be a problem as the 5W40 coverage is not much different from the 10W40.

I'd use it here without a thought though - others may differ but AUD $29/5 litres for an ACEA B3/B4 rated fully synthetic oil appeals to my Scottishness.

I couldn't pass up on a bargain so I bought enough oil to do 4 oil changes. From what I read the SynPower has very good wear protection. I contacted Valvoline and they said it was overkill for the CRD, and a semi synthetic would do.

I'm using it in my 6.7L Ford engine. Its cheaper for the local Valvoline oil shop to do my oil changes then for me to do them myself using Walmart bought oil. As soon as I put 7.5k miles on it, I'll pull an oil sample and send it in for analysis.

On BITOG, the VOA (virgin oil analysis) shows similar values to Mobil 1 5w40.

I'd use it in a KJ CRD and may even try it in my WK CRD despite not having MB certs.

Turns out the 5L oil is actually $9.95 due to a recent $20 cashback promotion in Australia.
Has to be bargain of the century, so I am picking up 8 bottles (oil shelve life is 5 years unopened).

Fill your boots at that price - works out to GBP £5.08 for 5 litres - cheapest here is currently £28 (that's AUD $50.00), I'd be doing what your doing........
