So I picked up a 2005 crd back in April with a smoked front diff and a bad #4 glow plug dtc. Brought it into the tranny shop for the diff while I waited for the back ordered glow plugs. Got it back and the glow plugs in the mail. Wound up snapping of the glow plug in the head. Drove it anyway to find it was burning coolant. Long story short, I pulled the head. Had the machine shop pressure test it and it was no good.

Got a brand new assembled head, updated rockers, arp studs, weeks stage 1+2, water pump, timing belt and pulleys, h.d.s. t-stat, map sensor, samcos and put it all together. The engine started and ran great but now I had a new problem.

The transmission only had 3rd gear until I realized I could use the shifter to force 2nd. But that's it 2nd and 3rd gear. Mind you the trans did shift through all 5 before. With the scan tool I found u0146 lost comm with gateway A and p0683 glow plug/heater module comm problem.

I posted on another thread already because it was the only active one I could find with the gateway module aka fcm mentioned.

So I proceeded to test all the bus lines with a meter. Turns out I have connection for can bus + and - as well as pci bus between the fcm, tcm, ecm and anti-lock brake controller. Also had 5v, 12v and ground all the places it was supposed to on the fcm.

Figured it was a bad fcm. Ordered a new one and a glow plug module for good measure. Installed and started it up and still have the same codes and limp mode.

A few other things. I did check all the fuses ( good ). It is charging (14.2v when running ). I made a new ground for the fcm ( figured what the heck ). I visually inspected wires and connectors going to the trans itself. I also unplugged, made sure all the pins looked good, dielectric greased and re-seated the fcm, tcm and all the other large main harness connectors.

No transmission codes?
Check all the harness connections over by the tcm. You likely had to disconnect some of them when you pulled the head. There is also a ground strap over there that gets screwed in the body.

For the record, can you share where you obtained a brand new assembled head and was the price reasonable?
It might come in handy and help others who might find themselves in need of a replacement head....

I got mine from IDparts.

They had them new factory assembled, or rebuilt.

Finally! It was the ground strap over near the tcm. :pepper:
It never got put back during reassembly.
Gonna get some bfg at ko2 tires all the way around and I'm ready for winter. Can't wait to try those locking diffs.

I also got the head and almost everything else from idparts. One stop shop for liberty crds over there.

Almost forgot.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Couldn't have done it without lost jeeps. I genuinely hope I can contribute and help others that are lost with other problems so they can get lost on the trails instead.

Lostjeeps...go from :banghead: to
