Hey all! It's been some time since I've been on here. When my HG had a catastrophic failure about 1.5 years ago blowing all the coolant out the overflow, i bought a 09 jetta sportwagen tdi as a dd for a bit. Now I'm back into fixing the crd.

I arp studded the head the last time but it developed a leak about a year after I did it the first time. Don't know why. I torqued the inner bolts to 130 ft lb, outers to 125 I think. But now I have a cracked cylinder wall. Can the normal Joe schmoe push a loner out and back in. Pics to follow.[[/img]

Replacing the liner isn't hard, there isn't much at all holding them in. HOWEVER - you will have to pull the engine first, you can't take out the rod bolts without the pan off, and the crossmember won't allow that while in the body.

Go with the two-hole gasket when you do this, forget about measuring anything. That and a healthy coating of Copper-Kote will ensure a good solid seal.

Thanks geordi! The crack in the piston wall wont let the engine turn. So i need new rings. Any source on old style rings? I assume my 05 MY has the old style.

What's with the new vs old lifters? I've been reading about?

It is easier to just get a piston and liner kit from IDparts, you will probably discover the piston has damage anyway. It comes with the new rings already installed, and all you need to do is rotate them to the right spots and compress them. Easy.

I would also suggest since you will have the engine out anyway, install new rod bearings in all 4. That will basically give you a brand new motor.
