Post subject:  Temp gauge TSB 08-043-05

I am wanting to know if my instrument cluster has had the TSB 08-043-05 recalibration flash before I start to diagnose my overheating problem (while climbing steep grades). The local jeep dealer wants $125 to check it. Can I do this myself somehow?

How hot is it getting?
Is the needle going all the way to H?
Is the coolant boiling over with steam pouting out?

The easiest way is to ge a IR temp gun, about 25-40 dollars from local hardware or autoparts store. And when it start to overheat pull off the road (keep engine running), pop the hood, and take a temp reading at the top of the theermostat.

it has hit the red mark and dinged at me twice. it has never boiled over or steamed. to be on the safe side i have been pulling off the road the first chance i get after it passes the 3/4 mark. after reading the coolant gauge breakdown thread on the gde forum it think it needs to be calibrated. but i don't want to give the dealer $125 to tell me it has already been done.

can i get the software and check it myself? and possibly update it myself if needed? i have been wanting buy the cable and delete the egr anyways.

One of the diy tunes might have the proper gauge calibration but no one has specified that detail in any of the tunes. It wouldnt hurt to try.

In either case, your engine is still running a bit too hot.
Maybe you should consider installing a new fan clutch or doing a cooling system flush.

sadly i just replaced the fan clutch with one from napa. it didn't change a thing. my next move after the gauge calibration is going to be another fan clutch, this time i will try the heavy duty one from Hayden mentioned in the forum. then I'll resort to the flush. I'm definitely disappointed in the new fan clutch (and old one). it never engages enough to make a noticeable sound.

as always.....I'm open to suggestions

The TSB applies only to the 05 model and has a fairly specific set of symptoms. If you want a copy email me, not PM.

I went thru this with my local dealer some years ago; temp rise towing small boat in summer on flat roads with AC on. Service writer, typical idiot, wanted to charge me to "diagnose" the problem even with TSB in hand. I told him that wasn't going to happen and that what would happen is they would plug in their scan tool and query the system to check calibration. If it was incorrectly calibrated they would fix it for $0 under the TSB. If it was NOT incorrectly calibrated I would owe them for 0.2 hrs of work time per the TSB and we could then discuss diagnosis. They were not happy but did hook up scan tool and BIG surprise gauge was incorrectly calibrated.

Why not get yourself a bluetooth OBDII interface and the torque app. You can then see what the actual temperature is.

It's not clear if the vehicle was still in warranty in your case but a TSB repair is usually only covered while under factory warranty. If your Jeep was out of warranty, the dealer doesn't have to perform the fix for free.

Perhaps but mine was out of warranty when they did the calibration for $0 under the TSB. Regardless the DCJ "book" time to do it is 0.2 hrs which is the maximum they should charge for if all they do is plug in the tool to check calibration and calibrate if need be. That cost should be well under the $125 proposed. Even at a shop rate of $200 the cost should not exceed $40+tx if any.

My rig is a 2005. The dealer will not check it for free as it's definitely out of warranty. That's why I am asking if I can do it myself. $125 will buy me a new fan clutch and a coolant flush.

tell me about the Bluetooth connector to monitor temp. won't it just say the same as the dash? or is there a different sending unit for the ECM?

I agree that it should cost less. If i had been quoted 40$ i would have paid it on the spot. Are the software updates dealer only? Or is there a chance I can find a cheaper mechanic with the equipment and software to do it? Although I would love to be able to do it myself.

I guess i have talked myself into spending my money on the fan clutch and flush, instead of the gauge recalibration.

has anyone here actually tried the Hayden clutch? did it make a noticeable difference in fan noise (roar) when engaged? or should i try manually locking my current clutch with a screw?

to be honest I believe i could install an electric fan and do better than i am doing now

In my opinion I wouldnt worry about the fan clutch. Even if you are only moving 25 mph you would still be pushing quite a bit of air through the rad.v I would go with the flush and see what you get.

Will let you read the temperature direct from the ECU. The calibration is for the instrument cluster only which determines how the temperature is presented on the gauge.

The heavy duty Hayden fan clutch for a GM V8 with HD towing cooling will fit the Jeep CRD perfectly, only requires changing out the mechanical fan blade to a 11 blade GM fan. I have one installed on my CRD and it works great, costs less than Mopar OEM parts, much less than an electric fan, and is available at NAPA... :D

And yes, when first accelerating you can hear the fan moving air...really helped my AC cooling during summer in stop and go traffic :wink:

i believe the flaw is that the current clutch doesn't engage at a low enough temp. how can i find out the temp that the gm clutch engages at? 11 blades won't make a difference if its just freewheeling. and i highly suspect that is my problem. I have had no a/c problems and never overheat unless i'm climbing a steep grade.

Unfortunately they do not list engagement temperatures, data may be proprietary and they do not publish it?

    From Hayden's Web site on the GM 2986:
    Hayden Severe Duty Thermal Fan Clutch 2986
    Turns the fan 80-90% of the shaft speed when engaged (HD clutch speeds are slightly lower %)
    Turns the fan 20-30% of the shaft speed when disengaged
    Used with deeper pitch fans. (2-1/2” of pitch)
    Land and groove design with up to 72 Sq. In. of working area
    Larger working surface provides cooler running and longer life expectancy
    Thicker body and deep finned faceplate dissipate more heat
    Can be used in place of many heavy-duty clutches

Please remember, this clutch is used on GM truck V8 engines including 1/2 through 1 ton vehicles. It along with the 11 blade GM fan will move a lot of air! :D

i verified that the clutch is engaging. i drove up hill until the temp reached 3/4, then pulled over and used a magazine against the fan blade and i couldn't slow it down. so i am satisfied that the clutch is working. but there isn't an audible noise (roar) that i have heard on previous vehicles when the fan clutch engages. so now i will go with the flush when i get time.

i would like to verify that i am getting airflow through the a/c condenser. any ideas how to do that? maybe some way to watch the path of the air coming through the fan.

The 11 blade fan will move more air than the metal 5 blade fan! Another option: If you do not want to go the full GM fan & HD clutch setup, then you can replace just the fan with a Mopar 11 blade fan that was used on the gassers, its part no. is: 52079654AE (Mopar 11 blade plastic fan for 02- 07 3.7 gassers) It is a direct bolt on replacement to your existing clutch.

questions:
1. while you were driving like this, was the AC on?
2. if the AC was on, was the electric fan running?
3. have you verified that the electric fan works? It should turn on when coolant temp gets above 205F or when the AC is on.

Dirt, bugs, and small birds can clog up the cooling stack. Use a garden hose to spray through and clear that junk out. (Yes, BIRDS. My CRD has eaten a few)

You can try a smoke test but I'm not sure how well it would work.
