2005 crd 145k, Terrible whine while driving this week followed by a loss of power and black smoke... popped the hood and oil on my power stearing res. and surrounding components around turbo. Im not sure where to proceed, any help would be greatly appreciated, and if it is the turbo anyone have one available? Thank you everyone

Certainly could be turbo b/c of the sound, but the oil is not always indicative of anything by itself. First thing, I would pull the airbox-to-turbo hose off (prepare for it to disintegrate on you) and check the actual turbo shaft for play. A small amount of front to back play is acceptable and normal. Virtually ZERO side to side play is what you should feel - any more than that, or blades that look "bent" or cut or polished... Says bad things have happened. If the sides of the intake (facing forward) are polished near the blades, that also indicates contact has happened, which is bad.

As far as replacements, Garrett genuine is the only thing I would suggest, and the cost is about $1100 at IDparts. Beware of anything substantially cheaper, as it is likely to be a chinese knockoff and may or may not be any good right out of the box.

These things spin at 150k rpm, so you cannot just slap them together.

Thanks, i will start tonight, just from looking from the top and underneath, the oil is coming from the turbo area, thanks again and if i have any questions I will post them. I read about the knock off turbos... no bueno, and that theses can not be rebuilt... looks like my only option if its the turbo. Thanks again

I had the same noise, same whine, same oil spray on he same parts..... turned out to be the upper CAC hose. The hose blew off of the turbo... I failed to tighten the spring clamp good enough and it worked itself loose.

Check that or a split CAC hose.

Yes. I did it with Papaindigo as an assistant and witness to the rebuild, we both thought it was done successfully and felt satisfied with the results.

It was screaming and making jingling noises on shutdown (vanes hitting the housing) within 300 miles.

I have not yet come in contact with a successful rebuild, but I have heard of several with similar experiences to my own.
