Can removing the head bolts be done without removing the TB? I currently have NO leaks. I'm doing this as a preventative measure. Also, if the rockers look good, should I consider replacing anyway? This will be my first CRD engine wrenching. Done lots of gassers in the past. Any suggestions on things to know before diving in would be greatly appreciated? Stats: Factory REMAN with about 45K miles. |

No. Camshafts are mounted in "valve" cover and head bolts are under valve cover. You need to pull the TB before the "valve" cover can be removed. Once removed you can replace the head bolts with studs one at a time. Do a search for geordi's posts on this topic. I'm sure you will get lots of opinions on rockers but IMHO at your mileage if they look and feel solid (good bearings) I'd leave them alone and if you have not already done so spend that money on a GDE tune. |

From what I've read, I'm not sure I'm up to doing that work myself. I've already got the GDE tunes: engine and trans. Also the Weeks Stage 1 and 2. |

TB is like $75. If you are in that far replace it and you are good for another 100k miles. Check TB idlers for leaking grease, replace as needed, TB tensioner and water pump likely ok to leave in. Jobs not hard just tedious but doable with right tools or you can ask for help. Don't know where you are in Colorado but there are members there like SirSam. |

SirSam is out there, and I have been out there to several member's homes as well. Be aware that you will need the timing tools as well as a counter-hold for the pulleys or one of the proper clamps, and doing this job will probably take you at least 3 days since you are diving in for the first time. I would also strongly suggest the elbow kit to delete your EGR plumbing and protect the rockers that you have currently, with so few miles on them they should be just fine to retain rather than replace. Send me an email if you would like to discuss having the work done for you in your driveway, and of course you are welcome to observe / chat while I work on it. I can do this procedure in one day, replacing the bolts for studs, installing the elbow kit, fresh metal glow plugs (if needed - you may not need these) and a timing kit or just the belt for a very reasonable amount. If we schedule carefully with flights, the travel also may not be too terrible. |
