from the second she starts the fan is blowing air out around the shroud. a search here gave no results but elsewhere it seem the fan should not come on until around 200*. I'm wondering if this has something to do with the coolant temp gauge never getting above 1/4 up? any thoughts? |

Are talking about the electric fan or the engine driven fan? |

engine drive fan, probably it's just me with my first diesel an not understanding how everything works, I guess it's called a viscous fan which until now I had never heard of. I thought it was an electric fan thermostatically controlled fan, thus it should not be on cold but as I understand from reading it is part of the cabin heater system. sometimes I miss my 1947 CJ2a. |

Engine mechanical fan has nothing to do with cabin heat. Its operation is controlled by a thermal fan clutch (http://www.haydenauto.com/featured%20pr ... ntent.aspx). However, the clutch never "fully" disengages so the mechanical fan will spin some when the engine is cold assuming of course that the clutch has not locked up. You can check this easily - with the engine OFF; open the hood; you should be able to get your fingers on a fan blade (be careful as blade edges may be sharp); you should be able to move the fan but against a bit of resistance (e.g. it won't spin freely). If you cannot move the fan you probably should replace the fan clutch. See chat at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=72032 |
