Now that the cold starts here is my answer works great 11volt glow plugs as in chrysler uk 2.8 crd with a mercedes glow plug modual and dual batteries one in the back in a tupper ware container connected directly to starter with welding plugs so easy to remove only need it for jan feb . With this setup I can leave plugs on for as long as i want to still get post heating as soon as you turn the key the modual goes into post heat mode for approx 30sec At -18 did not like it but it started rattled and smoothed out within 20 sec cost was 150 cdn battery I had anyone interested in procedure pm me for how to install I ran a 1986 2.1 d jeep cherrokee for 15yrs with great success sill have it tony |

Do you have more info on the 11V glow plugs and the Mercedes glow plug module? |

What is the part number for the glow plugs? Being that they are 12v glow plugs, you probably wouldnt need a fancy controller. A relay and toggle switch would work. But it would be purely a manual funtion. Toggle the GPs on for 1-3 seconds then off, then start the engine. |

the mecedes modual takes care of the off on function 1 line to dash led 1 wire to ignition wire on starter motor turn on ignition unit is active depending on temperature light goes off I generally wait a few more seconds depending on temperature I have a amp meter to tell me draw it also indicate all four are on cold 75 amp hot 50 amp as soon as you start the jeep modual goes to post heat mode i have been using this for 2 winters zero trouble for those that need emission test I have mount old plugs to heat sink and plug them in for test no check engine light |

I found these glow plugs on Ebay for a friend that has a 06 Liberty CRD KJ in Vt. that wouldn't start at 28* with the steel glow plug up grade. He installed these with a manual push button and relay, fired right up at 17* after holding the button for 5 seconds. Note: The seller's description say's the glow plugs are 10mm x 1.25mm pitch, the pitch is actually 1.00mm. I did email the seller about this. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jeep-Cherokee ... 3ACherokee |

I've thought about doing the same thing but I don't have cold starting problems where I live. I wonder how much current they draw? |

I'll see if he has an amp meter to check the draw. He fused it at 40 amps, he said it blew a 30 amp fuse. |

Ya the older Jeeps use the 12V glow plugs. Though I'm not sure if they might be the cure to the hard starts. I have to assume the change to the lower voltage plugs was for a reason....... |

Sir Sam wrote: ....I have to assume the change to the lower voltage plugs was for a reason....... Yes, the holy grail that diesel manufacturers have been striving towards is instant start and hence the introduction of low voltage plugs, lower thermal mass ceramic plugs and precise electronic control. The lower the rated voltage of the plug the more margin you have to overdrive it. A 5V plug supplied with 12V will generate around 2.5X the heat energy than if it was supplied with 5V. This allows it to reach full operating temperature a lot faster. Of course, this can only be sustained for a brief period else you risk blowing the element so after this initial short pre-glow phase the ECU will throttle back closer to the plugs rated voltage. |
