Why not stick with ceramic glow plugs? There is no question that they are the best for cold starting. Just remove them on an annual service to clean of any built up carbon and check for cracks. Not much more difficult than removing spark plugs. I just don't see the problem.

1. The ceramic plugs are no longer available here in N America

2. Ceramic glow plugs can break and cause severe engine damage

Perhaps but then again I don't know the layout of the right hand drive CRD's engine bay. What I do know is that removal of glow plugs in a left hand drive CRD is VASTLY more difficult than simple removal of spark plugs with the possible except of one vehicle whose make/model/date I don't remember where back spark plug removal required removal of an entire fender. Now if you have removed all the OEM intake elbow "stuff" and replaced with Weeks elbow kit the job is somewhat less difficult.

PS yes they can break but not that easily during removal especially if anti-seize compound is used on reinstall. Chat seems to indicate though that at the first sign of a glow plug CEL they should/must be replaced as breakage in imminent and as noted replacement ceramics are not available except used.

I do agree getting at the GP's on this engine is probably one of the hardest I have come across. The only case I have heard of, known failed ceramic glow plug that caused engine damage turned out to be a Chinese copy of a Bosch plug. But also consider, there has been more spark plug problems causing engine damage recorded on gas powered motors.
Not obtainable in the US. I guess its due to misconception of the product.

Are the ceramic glow plugs still available in Europe? I thought Bosch discontinued them.

Correct, they're discontinued worldwide. Anything you can find is old stock.

Beru are a large supplier of ceramic GP's, but I have only found 11v version for the 2.8 VM. BERU - Ref: 0100226494
