I just went through a lot of trouble to get my trans functioning properly due to bypassed wiring from control unit, ran well for a bit, then started throwing codes and cutting power on the highway. First time was just the P0234 turbo overboost code, I cleared it, and it stayed away until I hit the highway 70+MPH, then it came back with the P0069 manifold pressure and P0072 codes, and really cut power. Now if I clear the codes, they are back within minutes. Also to note, she chronically loses coolant, but I cant tell where. Reading codes with BlueDriver. Trying hard not to get discouraged here...

Looks like you might have a bad MAP sensor.

For the coolant loss, do a cooling system pressure test.
Top off with water, pump it up to 16psi, and let it sit for 30 min.
Then look for coolant drips and tighten up any loose clamps.
If there are no external coolant leaks then the problem might be a leaking EGR cooler or a bad head gasket.
Any white smoke out the exhaust?

Codes point to a MAP sensor issue! Replace your MAP sensor with this GM part no. 55206797
It is the same Bosch sensor used on the Jeep CRD and only cost $20 which is much less than the Mopar part. Mopar MAP sensor 68031593AA lists for $135....
Many on this forum are running the GM MAP sensor including myself with no problems or issues.

The EGR is what kills the MAP sensor over time by gunking it up!!!
Is your EGR still in service?
If so you need to block it off with a block off plate or install a Weeks (Sasquatch Parts) elbow kit which does away with the EGR, EGR cooler, and FCV!!!
If you you would like more information on either the block off plate or Weeks kit, just ask. Many on here willing to help...

Thank you both, I will pick up the GM MAP sensor and try that. As for white smoke, not really. It did blow off for a while on cold start this morning, but cleared up pretty quickly. I was imagining it to just be warmup steam, maybe exacerbated by the current issue, but I will keep a closer eye next time. Would coolant burn typically clear up when it heats up?

Also, I want to install the Weeks kits, but I am worried about passing smog in CA, any info on that?

Yes it would and you should see some white smoke during the process. If you stand at the back of the Jeep behind the exhaust and have someone start it when you see the white smoke, it should have a faint smell of antifreeze if coolant is getting into the combustion chamber.

Are you having to add antifreeze coolant to the coolant tank? Loosing coolant level in the tank would be another indicator of an external leak or head gasket leak...

As to the EGR removal: If removing it totally may be a problem with passing a visual emission inspection; you can block off the EGR feed tube to the EGR and it will stop all the gunk buildup in the intake and make the motor run better.

How quickly the white smoke (or steam) clears up depends kn how cold it is.
Mine had white smoke at startup for several months before I realized that coolant was leaking into the exhaust.

As far as CA emissions go...
I think at least one CA resident installed the EGR delete kit and passed emissions.
It really depends on the person doing the testing. They may not know what to look for.
And the check engine light must be off with no codes set

Any white smoke out the exhaust?

I recommend doing a cooling system pressure test.
Top off system with water.
Pump it up to 16psi.
Come back 30 min later and look for drips.

If still no visible drips...
Unplug all 4 injectors.
Remove all 4 glow plugs.
Crank the engine.
If water sprays out of the glow plug holes you have a bad head gasket or a cracked head.

If you are losing coolant, there are several possibilities, none good, but some worse than others.

Test your exhaust for coolant on start up.

Thanks all, I replaced the MAP sensor, and that cleared up the P0069 code and stopped the turbo from cutting out, but the P0072 (ambient air sensor) and P0234 (turbo overboost) keep coming back intermittently. Any thoughts?

The vanes on the turbo are sticking. There are visual checks you can do to verify this. Several posts discuss the movement of the control rod below actuator. When cycling vacuum/no vacuum the rod should have a full 1/2 inch of movement...less means sticking vanes.

Drive it around and bring the engine up to the proper operating temperature.

Once the temp is at its highest mark, drive the vehicle up the steepest hill you can find and floor it..put the pedal to the metal and blow out the crud that's keeping the vanes from moving. I call it "Unsticking" the vanes.

Do this a few times... you will notice/feel the turbo gradually begin to return or until vane movement is restored.

I got it up to temp, started uphill, and floored it, it gave a boost, but pretty quickly seemed to loose boost, power went down, and could just maintain speed uphill. Since then, it started smoking at warmup, pretty sure it's diesel, not coolant, until full temp. I just returned from a road trip, where it started emitting black soot/smoke uphill, losing power, until I was creeping over hills to get home with a black cloud in my wake.
It also started throwing the code P0299 turbocharger A underboost condition. darn.

Sounds like you are loosing boost!
Could be a bad or partly stuck open EGR valve dumping boost back into the exhaust manifold bypassing the turbo. This scenario would cause loss of power and black smoke when accelerating and / or in uphill conditions...
Adding an EGR block off plate would eliminate this possibility. See my earlier posts in this thread.

Do you see any sign of coolant leaking near the exhaust header pipe. Pull the rad cap off first thing in the morning before you start it, if it has any pressure you need a head gasket job, and possibly a head if it is warped or has cracks around the valve seats.

Mechanic says blowby indicates failed head gasket, and the turbo is shot. Is it worth fixing this thing? I've put a lot into it. If i go ahead, any upgrades I should consider in the process? Already thinking new turbo from GDE.

"Worth it" depends on a lot of things. including how much you enjoy it, and if you plan to keep it.

GDE turbo is currently (as far as I know) the very best option there is, (including OEM) and comes with it's own comprehensive tune.
It's also quite an outlay of funds, so (I would) only consider that if I loved the rig, were planning to keep it as long as it lasts.

Assuming that's your mindset, I would also make sure the rest of the drive train could stand up to it. You well may have already addressed some or all of these.

- Weeks 1&2
- ARP Studs
- Torque Converter
- upgrade your boost hoses
- Get rid of the factory Cat. Converter and Muffler. Straight pipe or your choice of a free-flowing muffler.

Because the vacuum pump is internal and vents into the crankcase, these normally have a lot of gases coming out of the crankcase while running. However if you're still having mysterious coolant loss, you may well have a leaky head gasket.

X2, you are so very correct on it having a lot of gaseous movement inside this engine!
