With no lift, just about any tire up to 30 inch diameter will work.
235-75-16, 245-70-16, and 255-65-16 should work.

Wheels are 5x4.5.
Wheels from older TJ wranglers will work.
Wheels from newer JK wranglers will not or will need adapters.

There is a wheels and tires subsection that might provide for complete information.

I am no expert on this, but this is what I can share.

Stock OEM Wheels: 16 X 7 in. - Offset: 38mm - Backspacing: 5.5 in.
Lug bolt pattern: 5 X 114.3mm or 5 x 4.5 in.

Tire sizes...........Other Wheels widths x diameter/offset mm
235/70R16 ..........7JJx16 / ET41.3
235/65R17..........7.5JJx17 / ET33.2
255/60R17..........8JJx17 / ET35
255/55R18..........8.5JJx18 / ET33

Based on the conscious of what some have posted on this forum and my own personal experience:

No lift, stock wheels:
235-75-16, 245-70-16, and 255-65-16 or any size smaller tire
Some have reported being able to run 245/75/R16 tires with some minor body mods (flatting pinch welds)

Recommended: These tire sizes perform best with some engine tuning for increased HP and torque to offset the higher gear ratio created by the taller tires

Some lift (2-2.5 in.), stock wheels:
*245/75/R16 or any size smaller tire, no body or suspension mods required other than taller springs and updating shocks/struts
(*this is what I am running currently)

Aggressive lift, (>2.5)
265/75/R16, requires mods like JBA's upper control arms, and a few others like additional pucks, coil overs, etc...

Anything larger requires changing the ring and pinion ratio to a lower numerical ratio, i.e. 410:1 to get the engine back into its happy torque zone...

Going to 17 inch or larger wheels adds another whole dimension depending on the tire size.
For 17 inch and larger wheels, use this tire size comparison tool to stay close to the 29-30 overall diameter:> https://tiresize.com/comparison/

Hope this helps,
Others like Tom Mudd may can add some additional information based on their experience....

I remember that 17" wheels which fit our bolt patterns and have appropriate offsets are extremely sparce. I would like to go 17's but there doesnt seem to be much available except for the JK wheels with spacers.

Thanks for the info. Would it be safe to say, that with limited options out there, most CRD owners stay with the original 16" wheels?

I think that would be a true statement or at least 16" wheels, maybe not always OEM's....

The Wrangler Moab wheels from the early 2000's look great on a KJ. They are 1" wider and fill the fender wells much better. Not sure if they will fit a stock setup, but this is what Jeep should have installed from the factory IMO.

TJ Moabs will fit, JK Moabs WILL NOT fit without adapters.

You would need 5x4.5 to 5x5 adapters.
Search amazon.

How do I find out about JK fitments and adapters? How do I go about finding proper adapters, wheel and tires dealers or general after market parts suppliers?

You will need a lift to run them even with stock sized 17" tires mounted.

My first 4x4 so it is all a bit overwhelming for me.

Go slow, do your homework, seek and listen to advise given by members on this forum; some of them have many, many years of experience dealing with these unique vehicles and can help to prevent you from making some bad choices or $ costly mistakes.... :juggle:

Thank you for this. I would like to follow up on your suggestion on engine tune up when changing wheel size. Could you elaborate on what kind of tune exactly and so on? Also, that you mentioned this, will wheel size change play with speedometer correct readout, and mileage accuracy?

Read this thread, I think it will answer most questions about an engine ECM tune:> http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=78418

As to speedometer impact when using larger tires and / or wheels; yes it will affect mileage readings and accuracy to some degree! The taller overall diameter you go past the stock diameter of ~29-30 inches will slow the speedometer down a little and actual mileage traveled will be greater than recorded by vehicle!
You can use this speedometer error tool to calculate actual differences in stock dia. vs. taller dia. tires:> http://www.paspeedo.com/calculator.htm

A Jeep dealer or a person who has a Mopar DRBIII tool can change the tire size setting in the body computer to some degree that will help keep vehicle electronics more accurate. The settings are limited though as to whatever DCJ pre-programed into the body computer when the vehicle was manufactured...

No. The Revs/mile can be set to whatever they need to be for accurate reading.

2007 and newer JK wangler is 5x5 bolt pattern.
1996-2006 TJ wrangler is 5x4.5 bolt pattern.

Thanks Sam, very good to know this, but was not what DCJ dealer mechanic tech told me several years ago, but he could also could have been mistaken???
