It is not a fuel problem.

What electronic sensor issues would cause it to quit and not restart?

No. 1 is CPS, crank position sensor! Notorious for failing during engine heat up cycle or even after engine is at normal operating temperature and does not always set a DTC (check engine light)
Cam sensor can also be problematic...

ok what is the fuel pressure reading? low side and high pressure (rail side) ? did you cap injectors one at a time to see if you had low pressure , ?CEL any codes?

Need a bit more information. For example does the engine turn over when you engage the starter? If so and it's not fuel and there is no CEL then yes the crank position sensor would be suspect. If it does not turn over then you need to look at battery or key switch/rod as the engine starts if the key switch rod running under the steering column turns the ignition switch but only if the ECU is "happy" with battery power enough to engage starter and tell the engine to start.

ops i just realized you are one of the veteran CRD guys , so just ignore my suggestions about fuel pressure loss , yes crank sensor , my bad

Turns over, but will not start. Where is the crank sensor?
Thanks, fellas

See pics at viewtopic.php?f=98&t=74594 . It's at back of engine just in front of transmission bell housing and behind some heat shields. Image 9 is a close in view. Test is to pull it off; hook up OHM meter; apply heat from like hair dryer; if resistance goes nuts it's bad.

Got it, PapaIndigo! As compared to some things on the CRD, this does not look too hard to get at, a minor PITA but not like doing the timing belt.

I knew it was at the back of the motor, but could not remember which side. Great pictures, btw.

Have both the cam and crank sensors coming. We shall see.

OOOOooohkay. Well, not really

FYI- New fuel filter installed before I asked the question in the first place, seems like good fuel flow.

Replaced the cam position sensor and the crank position sensor, and still no go.
Cranks fine, good voltage (Die Hard platinum) but not a hint of starting.

Any other thoughts? Anybody?

What are the symptoms again?
Engine cranks but wont start?
Any codes?

Check ASD fuse.
Check ASD relay.
Verify that there is no air in fuel.
Verify fuel supply to CP3.

Have no ability to get a fuel reading.

Was running fine down the road, DW reported that it started to run rough and then quit after a few seconds. Was able to restart once, then nothing. Cranks fine. CEL light is lit but no code reader presently.

Replaced fuel filter, even though fuel quantity was fine. No joy.

Replaced Cam position sensor. No joy.

Replaced Crank sensor. No joy.

All fuses rechecked.
Swapped ASD relay, no joy

Primer pump is tight, and in-tank pump is running on initial turn of key- can hear it running for a few seconds.
No air in fuel.

Am considering replacing fuel rail sensor with spare unit. Other thoughts?

Your best bet is to get a code reader and see what it says.

A bad fuel rail pressure sensor will not keep it from running. It will set a code and will still run but will be in limp mode.

Another possibility is the fuel quantity solenoid on the CP3. You could try unplugging it and if it runs that may be your problem.

You now need to verify that fuel is getting up to and pressurizing the rail.
A bad fuel rail pressure solenoid will keep the rail from building pressure.

ok if you don't have diagnosing tool , don't replace parts ,and don't do guess work , we see that people replacing CP 3 pumps , rather then diagnose fuel pressure loss, again if you absolutely can get this tools , then pull glow plugs and check if any damaged then we can suggest pulling injectors ,, but i rather you get that code reader first,

X2 on the cp3 also, more than a couple of people have replaced good ones. If it does turn out to be one I'll ship you one for free for all of your ARP work

Is there an inline fuel lift pump on this vehicle?

Lift pump is what should have been installed at the factory. Mine has it, and it is highly recommended.
