Belt Length for viscous heater delete

I know mountainman had deleted the A/c and viscous heater and figured out what belt and pulley he needed but I was cursious if anyone had deleted the VH only and knows what size belt the run. It looks like you could eliminate the motor lift point off the front and run the belt over the top of that idler instead of under.

I liked removing the mach fan (bearing that wears out at 150k), and getting the AC out for my extreme towing (no AC cooler in the way of the radiator). And just getting rid of 4 pulleys/bearings for reliability. You can relocate the tensioner also, but I don't know if you can do it with the AC and mech fan in there.
There's another place on the front timing cover that is made for the tensioner, and you just have to file a few mils of aluminum off of our tensioners to make them fit. Maybe the one VM made for that spot would have a different arm angle, and thereby be a better bet, if you could find one. Marine application I'm guessing?

I would get rid of the A/C if I wasn't so close to the sun and it's wasn't cloudless skies 364 days a year here. If it's anything over 55-60F and the sun is out then the AC helps a lot.

Yeah, I drive my jeep mostly in the mountains, where it's cooler. It sucks in the city when it's hot, but man is it nice to have ALL of the AC parts out of there. I like it dead simple and reliable for my trail/tow rig :rockon:

Unfortunately down in the deep South getting rid of the AC and mechanical fan is not a good option unless you want to sweat all the time and and overheat the motor!!!! :ROTFL:

100+ heat accompanied by very high humidity taxes both man and machine... :roll:

Yeah, I remember gutting the AC out of my old 4-runner when I was stationed in VA. It started to smell of sweat after a while :ALONE:

I don't miss the humidity :rockon:

Over the weekend I did my viscous heater delete.
Used gates 38029 pulley and acdelco 6k810 belt.

Neat! Now to figure out how to keep that mechanical fan pulley in the circuit! Maybe by using the smaller Gates 36157 steel pulley???
Both the 36157 and the 38029 have the same bearing bore, 17mm.

Any belt slip on the crank? I'd like to delete it as well. May do the AC at the same time for the winter which will give me some extra wrap on the crank pulley.

Can the mechanical fan pulley be pulled with a regular puller or is a press required.

No belt slip. Even with the ac on.

Just curious, is there any way to reverse the guts in the tensioner so it tensions down instead of up? Then all you would need is to reverse the idler above it to grooved. The belt could go below the tensioner instead of above it. It'd lose a touch of crank pulley contact though.

You would have to do a bunch of searching to find a tensioner that mounted exactly the same way but had its tension throw reversed.

When I dug into my timing belt recently, I was reading a guide that mentioned the tensioner slot behind the fan pulley and to avoid confusing it with the proper one. Couldn't help but wonder if VM Motori makes one that drops right in. Maybe for a different application?

Oh well, worth a thought.

I think an aluminum plate with a Gates 36157 pulley or one similar to it and possibly an Idler Pulley Bushing Part # M17X12B bolted in the VH location would the the best way to make this happen? :idea:

That eliminates all the pulley clearance issues and would let you keep the mechanical fan in service...
Now if we can just get Seth at Sasquatch to make us a VH delete kit!!! Hint, Hint! :roll:

Took a quick measurement.
Its roughly 1.75 inches from the VH mounting posts to the inner race of a pulley bearing.
You could start with 1.5 inch OD square steel tube and use some different thickness washers to space the oulley outward

Chrysler used this engine in the voyager, it has a different serpentine belt set up that I seem to remember used the mount behind our fan mount.

Yes. You can safely unplug it or remove its relay. No codes.
When mine started leaking I completely bypassed it.

My VH relay has been unplugged for several years....and it does not trip any DTC's... :wink:

Slight correction to WWDiesel's post. Unplugging the viscous heater relay does not trigger a CEL (check engine light) but it does produce a stored code that can be read. B10B3-VISCOUS/CABIN HEATER RELAY CONTROL OPEN CIRCUIT. Should not be a deal breaker at an emissions inspection but if you worry about that sort of thing plug the viscous in a week before inspection. Code should clear on its own in 5-10 drive cycles.
