Good Morning: My 06 Liberty that has about 140,000 miles on it recently has been emitting white smoke from the exhaust under heavy acceleration. I have owned this vehicle since it had 110,000 miles on it and have kept the maintenance up it, timing belt done. Any help on why this might be happening would be helpful, thanks, Bruce |

Are you loosing any coolant (level) in the coolant tank? Are you having any issues of it trying to run a little over the normal temperature point on the temperature gauge? |

I just discovered the smoke last nite, I am monitoring it now, so far no loss of coolant, Bruce |

It's possible it could be the EGR cooler leaking internally, which can send coolant out the exhaust leading to white smoke at the tailpipe. You won't see any drops on the ground. Good time to do a delete assuming you haven't already. |

Good time to do a delete assuming you haven't already. Easy test. Loosen the bolts on the lower EGR pipe. If water drips out, it's the EGR cooler. Another test... Use a cooling system pressure tester. Pump it up to 16psi and walk away for 30 min or so. Remove the glow plugs, unplug all 4 injectors, and crank the engine. If water shoots out the glow plug holes you either have a blown head gasket or a cracked head. |

I have been running with the map sensor disconnected which to my knowledge eliminates the egr, although puts on the engine lite. I just had an oil change and the techs must have plugged in the map sensor which would activate the egr, am I way off base in this thinking, I don't have the bucks for a Green Diesel chip. Bruce |

Bruce MAP sensor or MAF sensor? MAP is on top of the engine. MAF is on the air filter lid. Yes, unplugging the MAF is supposed to stop EGR function. But that doesn't keep the EGR valve from getting stuck in a open position. Best to install some EGR blockoff plates to ensure that the EGR stays closed. |
