Post subject:  cooling issues and poor mpg
I have a 2006 liberty crd runs great. But gets about 14mpg The engine runs cold, temp gauge barely moves. Luke warm heat. Previous owner put an inline thermostat(195F). I replaced the thermostat .Still runs cold. New head gasket, timing belt and water pump. Has green eco tune and stage 2 weeks kit. Any ideas?

Maybe the temp sensor is bad. Is the sensor plugged in?
Any trouble codes?
Whats the coolant level at?
Do you get heat in the cabin?
Exactly how cold is it outside?
You may want to consider installing a factory new (not crown) thermostat housing and ditching the inline thingy.

Does the engine feel sluggish with little power?
Any smoke out the exhaust?

Pull your inline Tstat out.
Pull your failed oem Tstat out.
Install either:
- OEM type Tstat. (NOT CROWN)

- Modify your failed housing to use a Dodge Hemi type Tstat (I can't find the thread but there's one here with machining specs and instructions, if you have the skills or access to someone who does, it's your second best option.

- Buy a TurboDieselFreak artfully designed, CNC-formed, last-one-you'll-ever-need, housing that is all ready to bolt on, and comes with any Hemi T-stat you choose, which gives you a wide range of heat choices, and will probably be available long after the stock ones for this engine have faded away, and cost around 20 bucks rather than 150 at each change. Ya just gotta brace yourself for the first purchase. It's a doozy, but I am completely unaware of anything that outperforms it at any price. I am not needing it myself at the moment, but I'm budgeting for it, for when I do.

Thanks for the quick response. I understand that the factory housing should be replaced, that the in line thermostat was a cheap fix. I replaced the thermostat, more to troubleshoot the problem. Shouldn't the engine at least start off running at 195F . It's 50F, the jeep has been running for an hour, temp gauge hasn't moved and the engine is barely warm to the touch. Last week was single digit temps, the temp gauge actually moved more, about an 1/8th

On these engines, when the OEM thermostat fails, it usually fails open. Being open when cold causes the engine to run cold, since coolant flow is not being regulated. Actually just being open in general, the engine will be colder. These engines when at idle, generate such a small amount of heat, that if you are in a cold area with a failed thermostat, I'm a little surprised you are able to get the gauge to move at all. You need a working thermostat to allow the engine to reach proper temperature.

Hmm, your wording is making me wonder if you're actually driving it or just letting it sit and idle. If it's only idling it will never get up to operating temperature with such low ambient temperatures.
